Prunus Cistena

Flowering Plum

Prunus cistena – A Beautiful, Compact Flowering Plum with Vibrant Foliage and Blossoms

Prunus cistena, commonly known as the Purple-leaf Sand Cherry, is a stunning, small deciduous shrub that offers year-round interest with its rich purple foliage, delicate pink blossoms, and compact form. This variety typically reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 metres (5 to 6 feet), making it an ideal choice for smaller gardens, borders, or as an ornamental shrub in a mixed planting. Its striking purple leaves, which maintain their colour throughout the growing season, provide a bold contrast to the pale pink flowers that appear in early spring. As the season progresses, the shrub is adorned with small, dark fruits that attract birds, enhancing its wildlife value.

Why Grow Prunus cistena?

  • Vibrant Purple Foliage – One of the most distinctive features of Prunus cistena is its rich purple foliage, which emerges in spring and persists throughout the growing season. The deep purple leaves provide a striking contrast against other plants in the garden, adding bold colour and texture to borders or foundation plantings.

  • Beautiful Spring Blossoms – In early spring, Prunus cistena produces clusters of delicate, soft pink flowers that cover the shrub. These blossoms add a burst of colour to the garden before many other plants begin to bloom, making it an early-season standout.

  • Compact & Attractive Form – Reaching a height of 1.5 to 2 metres, this shrub has a compact, rounded form that fits well in small spaces, mixed borders, or even as a container plant. Its dense foliage and neat shape provide structure and interest without overwhelming the space.

  • Wildlife-Friendly – The small, dark purple fruits that follow the blossoms attract birds, making Prunus cistena a valuable addition to a wildlife-friendly garden. Its flowers also attract pollinators like bees, enhancing biodiversity in your landscape.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Position: Prunus cistena thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best colour and flowering, plant it in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate some shade, the best foliage colour and blooming display are achieved in sunny spots.

  • Soil: This shrub is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils. It prefers well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral, but is tolerant of a range of pH levels. Ensure the soil is not overly wet, as Prunus cistena does not thrive in soggy conditions.

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, Prunus cistena is fairly drought-tolerant, but it will perform best with consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells. Ensure the soil remains well-drained to avoid root rot.

  • Maintenance:

    • Pruning: Prune Prunus cistena after flowering to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged wood. Light pruning will help to keep the shrub compact and encourage new growth, but avoid heavy pruning as it may reduce flowering. Prune in late spring or early summer after the blooms fade.
    • Fertilising: Prunus cistena does not require heavy fertilisation. If your soil is poor, a light application of balanced fertiliser in early spring will help promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
    • Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the shrub to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the roots cool. Be sure to leave a gap around the trunk to prevent rot.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Prunus cistena’s bold purple foliage and delicate pink flowers pair beautifully with a variety of plants, making it versatile in the landscape. For a striking contrast, combine it with plants that have silvery, grey, or green foliage, such as Lavender, Artemisia, or Silver Mound (Artemisia schmidtiana). The rich purple leaves will stand out against the softer tones of these plants.

In mixed borders, Prunus cistena pairs well with spring-blooming bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils, or Crocus, which will complement its early flowers and provide additional colour as the season begins. For a more refined look, pair it with low-growing, perennial plants like Heuchera, Hosta, or Ajuga, where the contrasting foliage colours will highlight the beauty of Prunus cistena.

For a wildlife-friendly garden, plant Prunus cistena alongside other bird-attracting plants such as Viburnum, Serviceberry (Amelanchier), or Spiraea, which provide berries and nectar for pollinators and birds. The combination of flowers, berries, and foliage will create a dynamic, multi-season display.

Whether used as a focal point, a specimen shrub, or part of a mixed planting, Prunus cistena will bring colour, structure, and wildlife value to your garden throughout the year with its vibrant foliage, spring blossoms, and compact, attractive form.
