There is a vast selection of conifers and they really can vary from ground cover to large specimens that will fill any gap, they make a great alternative to shrubs for screening if you pick the right one for you and are just as attractive. They tend to be evergreen with the odd exception of the ginkgos and taxodiums that will loose their foliage.
