Catalpa or Indian Beam Tree

Are hugely popular, deciduous garden trees that are known and grown for their large large heart shaped foliage and the fragrant flowers, we would suggest a bench near by to fully appreciate these.

The most common varieties include the

  • Catalpa Bigniodes Nana or Indian Bean Tree are perfect for small gardens or terraces, thanks to its slow growing nature. It has large heart-shaped leaves. In summer it blooms, with purple pink fragrant flowers. They will then give way to long hanging green pods
  • Catalpa Bignoides Nana Aurea or Golden Indian Bean tree are perfect for small gardens as it is slow growing, this variety has stunning, large heart shaped yellow foliage, during the summer bears fragrant white flowers which develop long bean pods
  • Catalpa Bignoides larger growing tree with large, heart-shaped leaves, providing a lush, tropical appearance during the growing season. Showy clusters of fragrant, white flowers with purple and yellow markings in late spring to early summer which develop long bean pods

Where to site your Catalpa

Catalpa are slow growing and are usually medium-sized trees, they are ideal for small gardens to grow either as a standalone feature in the garden where you can appreciate the large leaves with other complimentary plants. 

How to grow and look after your Catalpa

These love and thrive in sunny spots but can tolerate shade.

They like well drained moist soil but once they are fully established they can tolerat clay soils. Protect yung trees from late spring forsts and windy sites as these can damage the large leaves

Caring Tips for Catalpa 
Watering

Water regularly until it is fully established and then only when its really dry, usually after a couple fo growing seasons. /p>

Pruning

Lightly prune only if needed, as this can reduce the amount of flowers the following year.

Feeding

Catalpas can be very greedy trees, they enjoy a well balanced feed, and it pays to use a good oragnic mulch to help lock in the goodness
