View full detailsAt Grasslands, we offer a wide array of fast-growing hedges. Fast-growing hedges can grow quickly to establish a dense, full border or property boundary. Popular for the speed with which they can transform your garden, fast-growing hedges can enable you to achieve your landscaping goals and help you maintain the privacy of your property.
Fast-growing hedges allow many advantages for landscaping and property enhancement:
• Privacy: Fast-growing hedges allow for a quick and effective barrier. Whether required to establish a property boundary or privacy screening, they are effective at reducing noise pollution and blocking unwanted views.
• Security: Intruders don’t want to tackle dense hedging, as it makes access to a property challenging. Fast-growing hedging can also clearly mark a property boundary.
• Attractiveness: These lush hedges can improve the appearance of your property significantly. Depending on your style and needs, these hedges can be trimmed into a variety of shapes and sizes. Certain varieties can even produce colourful foliage, flowers and berries. Not only can these significantly improve the appearance of your outdoor space, but they also attract a range of wildlife (supporting biodiversity in your garden).
• Windbreaks: Protecting your garden from strong winds, fast-growing hedges can help prevent wind damage to plants and structures.
• Noise Reduction: To help reduce noise from surrounding areas, the dense foliage can absorb and deflect sounds.
• Increase in property value: Attractive and well-maintained hedging can help to increase the value and appeal of your property.
• Low maintenance: While needing some initial care, once established, they will require less maintenance due to their rapid growth. Once planted, their quick growth can fill gaps to make a dense border that hides weed growth, reducing the need for frequent pruning. Hedges with a deep root system can help stabilise soil and prevent erosion.
When choosing a fast-growing hedge, reflect on your specific needs. The benefits of fast-growing hedges can depend on the species chosen, alongside the climate and growing conditions. Certain hedges may need regular maintenance, such as trimming and watering, to ensure their overall health.
When picking a fast-growing hedge, ensure that it can thrive in your chosen environment. Factors to consider include:
• Climate: Some plants are more tolerant to certain temperatures than others. It is important to select hedges which are suitable for the UK’s specific climate.
• Access to sunlight: Establish the sunlight conditions in your assigned planting area. Certain hedges require full sun, whilst others can survive off partial or full shade.
• Soil Type: Your soil type can vary between sand, clay, loamy (comprised of a mixture of clay, sand and silt) or acidic. Before choosing your hedging, determine your soil type to ensure that your plant will thrive.
• Space available: Reflect on the space available and the height of your plant once it reaches maturity- this will ensure that your hedging fits your space well and adds to the attractiveness of your outdoor area.
• Purpose: When choosing your hedge, think about its purpose (whether aesthetic, to act as a windbreak, or to protect your property) identifying this will determine the best hedging required.
• Maintenance: Fast-growing hedges may need more maintenance as they become established to control their growth and shape. However, certain types are more low maintenance than others. Certain hedging may be more susceptible to disease and pests in your area. Pick a hardy species to minimise rise. Some species of fast-hedging plants have a shorter lifespan and require more frequent replacement, others can last for decades. Choose hedge plants that match your water resources.
With over 35 years of experience in horticulture, Grasslands is here to support you in choosing the best fast-growing hedge for your space. Below are a few popular examples of the fast-growing hedges that we have available:
Our Green Privet 10 Litre 160/170cm is a green privet grown in a 10 litre pot at 160cm/170cm. Popular for their ability to grow anywhere. They can be trimmed to any shape and size and can attract bees and other wildlife in the Summer. If there are leaves missing when in the pot or during colder temperatures, don’t worry as they usually come back in early spring. We advise that you plant 2 per metre for an instant look or stretch them out and wait a season for the foliage to develop.
Green Leylandii Hedging
The Green Leylandii is a fast-growing hedging plant. As an evergreen conifer, they grow quickly and provide dense hedging all year round. When planting, we advise that you plant 2 per metre.
Portuguese Laurel
Our Portuguese Laurel Myrtifolia is similar in looks to a Bay Laurel, however, they are a much hardier hedging plant. They can survive in exposed areas. On average, they grow to 40/50cm in height. They have dark green, medium-size pointed foliage set against red stems. They are slower growing when compared to other hedging plants, with ½ ft of growth per year. We advise that you plant 2 or 3 per metre.
When planting and establishing a fast-growing hedge, remember to consider the type of hedging plant chosen and the conditions which it will be grown. Here are step-by-step instructions to help you plant fast-growing hedges successfully:
1. Choose the correct hedge plant for your soil type and climate.
2. Sunlight and well-draining soil: Ensure the area receives adequate sunlight and has well-draining soil.
3. Outline the area: Determine the length and width of the hedge, using markings to outline the area. Remember to plan for spacing between plants where needed to allow for the plant’s growth. For fast-growing hedges, it’s usually around 2-3 feet apart.
4. Dig the hole: Use a shovel to dig holes that are twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower, the root ball should be level with the surrounding soil. Save the soil to mix with compost when planting.
5. Mix compost or organic matter with the soil you extracted when creating the hole. This will support the soil’s fertility and drainage.
6. Remove the plant from its container: When taking the plant out, go gently- ensuring not to damage the roots.
7. Planting: Put each hedge in the prepared hole- make sure it is level with the surrounding soil. Tap gently to remove any air pockets.
8. Water: Newly planted hedging may require generous amounts of water to ensure the soil has good root-to-soil contact.
9. Mulch: applying mulch (a protective covering of organic or inorganic material) to the base of a plant, around 2-3 inches layer to retain moisture.
Regular maintenance is required to manage the rapid growth of these fast-growing hedges. To ensure hedging maintains a neat and manageable form, follow the hints and tips below:
1. Monitor growth and overall health: regular maintenance is key to ensure that your plant is thriving and free of pesticides and disease. If you do notice any pests, such as aphids, scale insects, mildew and leaf spot, use appropriate treatments- ensuring to follow instructions for maximum results.
2. Watering: When establishing hedging, ensure adequate watering. Young hedges need consistent moisture to develop their root system.
3. Fertilising: In the Spring, use fertiliser to provide essential nutrients. Remember to follow the fertiliser instructions for maximum results.
4. Pruning: After planting, initial pruning should take place to encourage branching. Remove about one-third of the height and lightly trim the sides. Regular pruning should then follow to maintain shape and size and to monitor health. The best times to prune are late Winter or early Spring. How often pruning takes place depends on your desired outcome. Fast-growing hedges may require pruning every 4-6 weeks.
