View full detailsIdentifiable by their glossy leaves and ability to produce flowers and fruits, Cherry Laurels are a beautiful addition to any garden. Alongside attractiveness, their fast-growth, density and minimal maintenance make them ideal for year-round hedging. There are many different Cherry Laurel plants, each with their own unique properties and your purpose will determine the type required. At Grasslands, our dedicated horticulturalists specially grow hedging plants, including Laurel hedges, Leylandii hedges and Privet hedges. Each of our hedging plants can be selected in varying sizes- making them perfect for low borders or to ensure privacy at up to 3.5 metres high.
Cherry Laurels are part of the genus Prunus, which includes foliage such as Prunus Laurocerasus (also referred to as English Laurel or Cherry Laurel) and Prunus Caroliniana (known as Carolina Cherry Laurel). Laurel hedging is the umbrella term for any hedging plant that is part of the Laurel family. Cherry Laurels are, therefore, a type of Laurel Hedging.
Cherry Laurels are characterised as evergreen foliage, meaning that they have dense, glossy leaves year-round. As a result, they are perfect for a formal hedge or as a standalone shrub.
Growing up to 60cm per year, Cherry Laurels are, typically, a fast-growing plant. Perfect for providing privacy and shelter quickly when creating a hedge. Due to their growth, Cherry Laurels may require trimming a few times a year.
Cherry Laurels can survive in a range of conditions including full sun or partial shade and a mix of soil types, making them the perfect choice for a multitude of garden types.
With their appealing flowers and fruit, Cherry Laurels can attract a range of wildlife to your garden.
Cherry Laurels should ideally be planted in the early spring, in a position with full or partial sun. They are best suited to soil that can drain well.
When planting shrubbery or small trees, remember to dig a hole that is deep and wide enough to fit the root ball of the plant. Ensure that it is not too deep that the point where the trunk meets the roots (root collar) is buried. After the plant has been positioned, you can place soil around the root. Then, tap down gently to disperse any air pockets.
At this stage, water the plant thoroughly to support the surrounding soil and ensure that the roots can access moisture. Providing vegetation with mulch around the base (around 2-3 inches deep) can also regulate soil temperature. This will help give your plant the best start possible in its new home.
Although Cherry Laurels are resilient plants and can endure varying environments, it is important to water them regularly during the first few years after planting. During dry periods, we advise to water once a week, avoiding getting water on foliage (as this can develop fungal diseases).
Apply a light dose of balanced fertiliser in the spring to support growth. Cherry Laurels are typically hardy against pests and diseases. However, they can develop leaf spot, root rot and scale insects. Monitoring plants regularly can help identify and then address any issues.
The optimal time to prune Cherry Laurel hedging is in the late spring or early summer, after the new growth has emerged. Shrubbery should be cut back to maintain shape and size. When pruning, use sharp, clean shears, avoiding removing more than 1/3 of the plant’s growth each year.
At Grasslands, our horticulturalists pride themselves on the bespoke specimens we provide, which are expertly grown on-site. Below are a few popular examples of the Cherry Laurels that we have available:
For smaller gardens, our Cherry Laurel Etna 4.5 litre pot is the perfect choice. With a current height of 80-90cm, it is ideal for gardeners who don’t want to worry about excessive maintenance. Their slow growth (at around 20-40cm per year) ensures less pruning, saving you time and effort! A shorter hedge gives you a clearer view of your garden and can be used to section areas of your space in a neat and appealing way. Due to their shorter height, light can penetrate to your garden, allowing your shrubbery to thrive. We advise that you plant 2 or 3 per metre depending on how fast you need a solid hedge. They are suitable for normal, chalk and clay soils and can survive without direct sunlight.
Our Laurel Hedging Cherry Laurel 40 litre Pot (at 180cm-200cm tall and 50-60cm wide) is ideal for an instant garden screen. With its glossy evergreen leaves, it is easy to see why it is the country’s favourite hedging shrub. Growing at between 30-60cm per year, it is a fast-growing plant. It can survive in normal, chalk and clay soils and can last without direct sunlight. When planting, we advise that you place at 2 per metre. You can plant 1 per metre, however, you will need to wait for the foliage to spread and fill the space.
Our Laurel Hedging Elly 110 Litre Pot Pruned Specimen (at a current height of 225cm) is a perfect instant screen. Growth of this Cherry Laurel is shorter, neater and slower than common Laurels (if not trimmed, will reach around 300cm in height). Our horticulturalists have tightly trimmed this to an even 65/70cm top to bottom, saving you the time and hassle! At Grasslands, we understand that when it comes to creating a formal hedge with a polished appearance quickly, a plant that has already been trimmed to a compact and uniform shape is crucial.
Cherry Laurels harbour toxins that can be harmful if ingested, especially for children and animals. Ensure that berries and leaves are kept away from areas where they may be eaten
When choosing a container for your Cherry Laurel, it is important to use one large enough to allow for root growth and drainage. To give your plant the best start, fill your container with a high-quality potting mix.
During the first year after planting, Cherry Laurel’s require regular watering. Ensure that soil is kept moist, but not waterlogged. When your hedge is established, it will be able to survive periods of drought. However, it is still vital to water during prolonged dry spells to maintain healthy growth.
Cherry Laurels can survive in full sun and complete shade. However, they thrive in sunlight, producing more flowers and fruits than if they were to develop in a darkened space.
