Osmanthus Hedging

Osmanthus is a versatile evergreen shrub known for its glossy foliage, fragrant flowers, and ability to form dense, attractive hedges. This low-maintenance plant adds year-round interest to any garden setting.

What are the different Varieties of Osmanthus available at Grasslands

Osmanthus × burkwoodii - Osmanthus × burkwoodii features small, dark green leaves and produces clusters of highly fragrant white flowers in spring. It grows at a moderate rate, reaching heights of 2 to 3 metres, making it ideal for low to medium hedges. Its compact, rounded shape is perfect for borders and pathways, providing both beauty and privacy.

Osmanthus 'Tricolour' - Osmanthus 'Tricolour' is distinguished by its variegated leaves, which are green with cream and pink edges. This striking variety adds colour and texture to hedges, growing up to 1.5 to 2 metres tall. The unique foliage makes it an excellent choice for ornamental hedges or as a feature plant in mixed borders. It thrives in well-drained soil with access to full sun or partial shade.

Osmanthus 'Variegata' - Osmanthus 'Variegata' offers eye-catching foliage with green leaves edged in creamy white, providing year-round interest. This variety grows to a height of 2 to 3 metres, making it suitable for medium-height hedges and screens. It has a dense, bushy habit, making it ideal for privacy hedging. 'Variegata' performs best in well-drained soil and can tolerate full sun to partial shade.

Where to Site Your Osmanthus Hedging

Osmanthus hedging thrives in well-drained soil and can adapt to a variety of light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. For optimal foliage colour and flowering, plant Osmanthus in a sunny or lightly shaded spot. It is hardy and can withstand pollution, making it a great option for both urban and rural gardens. Sheltered locations will help protect the leaves from strong winds.

Growth

Osmanthus hedging grows at a moderate pace, adding 20 to 30 centimetres per year. Its compact growth habit makes it easy to maintain as a hedge, offering a neat and tidy appearance with minimal pruning. Regular trimming encourages denser growth and helps maintain the desired shape and size.

Can I Maintain This Hedge?

Osmanthus hedging is relatively low maintenance. Prune once or twice a year, ideally after flowering in late spring or early summer, to shape the hedge and encourage bushy growth. Remove any weak, damaged, or dead branches to keep the hedge healthy. Its moderate growth rate makes it easier to manage compared to faster-growing hedge plants.

Caring Tips for Osmanthus
Watering

Water regularly during dry spells, especially when the hedge is newly planted. Once established, Osmanthus is drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pruning

Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Avoid heavy pruning, which may reduce flowering. Regular trimming helps keep the hedge neat and dense.

Feeding

Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Adding mulch around the base can help retain moisture and improve soil quality.

Signs of Pests and Disease: How to care for your poorly Osmanthus
Aphids

Look for curling leaves and sticky residue. Treat with insecticidal soap or encourage natural predators like ladybirds.

Scale Insects

Check for small bumps on leaves and stems. Use horticultural oil to manage infestations.
