Alnus

Alnus or Alder Tree

Are vigorous deciduous trees with rounded leaves and often conspicuous catkins in winter. These popular trees are often used for sites with poor soil, and they are often used for areas where erosion needs to be prevented. Along with the great uses these wonderful trees are amazing for birds that are drawn to their catkins in spring and winter their cones.

Our Popular Varities are:

Alnus (alder) Glutinosa known as black or common alder - has an attracive conical shape, purple / grey leaf buds open to dark green foliage with serrated edges. Flowers are on catkins which appear spring time. Alders have both male and female flowers are found on the same tree. Male catkins are pendulous and yellow. Female catkins are green and oval-shaped and are grouped in numbers of three to eight.

Alnus (alder) Cordata known as Italian Alder - is a fast growing variety that has a pyramid crown. This particular variety is great, they hold their glossy green foliage well in to December, making it a great option for screening. Yellow catkins in spring before the foliage breaks through... not wise to plant near buildings / patios

Alnus (alder) Incana known as Grey Alder - this fast growing variety is a perfect all rounder and ca even tolerate dry soils once established! Smooth dark grey bark with pointed dark green, hairy  foliage. The yellowish brown catkins arrive early spring, ideal feast for the early insects, the cones that follow in summer the birds then feast on them.
