View full detailsf you’re in search of a low-maintenance garden hedge that combines both aesthetic appeal and practicality, Privet Hedging is a great choice.
Privet hedging (Ligustrum ovalifolium) is prized for its lush oval-shaped green leaves and delicate white flowers that bloom during the summertime, attracting an array of wildlife such as butterflies and bees, bringing your garden to life. It's almost consistently an evergreen hedge but can be known to shed some leaves in winter, making it semi-evergreen.
The popularity of planting Privet hedging stems from its dense foliage, which not only provides privacy but also serves as a barrier against pollution when cultivated as a formal hedge. It’s also a fast grower, and thrives in most conditions, making it perfect for urban or suburban gardens.
Privet hedging thrives in various soil types, including standard, chalky, and clay soils, and adapts well to both full sun and partial shade. It also grows well in exposed areas and inland locations.
Reaching up to 5 metres in height, it’s important to choose a spot that accommodates its mature size. When planting, dig a hole slightly deeper and wider than the root ball, place the hedge in position, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Make sure the site is well-drained and loosen the soil to a depth of 12-15 inches to encourage healthy growth.
Privet hedging is known for its fast growth, typically adding 30-60cm per year, making it an excellent choice for quickly establishing dense, attractive boundaries.
Privet hedging is highly responsive to pruning and can be trimmed into various shapes and sizes. It’s recommended to prune it around twice a year to maintain its neat appearance. As with any hedge, regular maintenance is key to keeping your privet hedge healthy and looking its best.
Ensure your privet hedge receives regular and deep watering, adjusting based on rainfall and season. For new hedges, water 2-3 times a week during summer, while established hedges should be watered at least once a week. Regular watering is particularly important during dry periods to keep your hedge thriving.
Pruning is essential for maintaining the shape and size of your privet hedge. Regular trimming controls growth and keeps it looking neat and dense, as privet hedging grows relatively fast.
For optimal growth, apply a balanced fertiliser to your privet hedge in spring. This will promote healthy foliage and support vigorous growth throughout the season. A slow-release fertiliser or general-purpose feed works well to maintain its lush appearance and overall health.
