Corylus Avellana Contorta

Common Hazel

Corylus avellana 'Contorta', commonly known as Contorted Hazel, is a deciduous shrub prized for its uniquely twisted, gnarled branches. It typically grows 8-10 feet tall with an equal spread, forming a distinctive architectural structure that provides year-round interest, especially in winter when its contorted branches are fully visible.

In spring, it produces yellow catkins, adding ornamental value, while its broad, heart-shaped leaves emerge later and turn yellow in autumn. It thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. 'Contorta' is relatively low-maintenance and adaptable to various soil types, making it an excellent choice for adding texture and interest to gardens.

Where to Position Your Corylus Avellana

Corylus avellana 'Contorta' thrives in a variety of conditions but performs best in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It should be planted in fertile, well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging, which can adversely affect the roots. Consistent watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to keep the plant healthy and vibrant throughout the year.

Growth and Pruning

It is valued for its contorted branches and seasonal display, with foliage turning a vivid yellow in autumn. To maintain its distinctive shape and promote healthy growth, regular pruning is required. Cut back the plant in early spring to shape it and remove any dead or damaged branches. This helps preserve its formal appearance and encourages robust growth.
