Cornus sericea 'Kelseyi' - Dwarf Dogwood

A compact and characterful deciduous shrub, Cornus sericea 'Kelseyi' is a dwarf dogwood that packs impressive multi-season interest into a neat, low-growing mound. With attractive green foliage, warm autumn colour, and richly tinted winter stems, it is an excellent choice for smaller gardens and border fronts.

Seasonal Highlights

Fresh, bright green leaves emerge in spring and provide dense, attractive cover throughout summer. As temperatures drop in autumn, the foliage turns to vibrant shades of orange and red before falling to reveal a tracery of dark reddish-purple stems that add welcome structure and colour to the winter garden. Small creamy-white flowers appear in late spring, adding subtle seasonal charm.

Key Features

  • Neat, low-growing mounded habit
  • Rich autumn foliage colour
  • Dark reddish-purple winter stems
  • Small white flowers in late spring
  • Fully hardy and easy to grow
  • Ideal for smaller spaces and border edges

Perfect For

An excellent choice for the front of mixed or shrub borders, where its compact, mounded form provides structure without overwhelming neighbouring plants. Well suited to low-maintenance gardens, rockeries, and urban planting schemes. Works beautifully as ground cover or in mass plantings for maximum winter stem effect. Also effective in containers and courtyard gardens where space is limited.

Growing Tips

Plant in sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates heavier clay soils and periods of moisture, making it a dependable choice for a wide range of garden conditions. To maintain a tidy shape and encourage the best stem colour, trim lightly in early spring before new growth begins. Unlike larger dogwoods, 'Kelseyi' does not require hard coppicing to perform well, though a gentle tidy-up will keep it looking its best. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first growing season while establishing.

Looks Great With

Combines beautifully with other coloured-stem dogwoods such as Cornus alba 'Sibirica' or Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' to create a striking winter tapestry of contrasting stem colours. Pairs well with low-growing evergreens and winter heathers to provide a backdrop for its coloured stems. Underplant with snowdrops or early spring bulbs for a delightful seasonal combination as the garden comes back to life.

A versatile and reliable dwarf shrub that earns its place in the garden throughout the year, offering something to enjoy in every season from cheerful spring flowers to glowing winter stems.
