Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price' (Laurustinus 'Eve Price') is one of the most dependable and widely loved evergreen shrubs in British gardens. Compact, dense, and quietly attractive throughout the year, it earns its place in any planting scheme through the sheer reliability of its long winter and early spring flowering season. From late autumn right through to early spring, its dark green foliage is enlivened by clusters of deep pink buds that gradually open to reveal delicate white flowers — a welcome and cheerful sight during the coldest months of the year.
A selected form of the species, 'Eve Price' is valued for its particularly compact and neatly rounded habit, making it more restrained in growth than the straight species while losing none of its floral generosity. The flowers are followed by attractive metallic-blue to black berries that persist on the stems well into the season, adding further interest and providing a useful food source for birds. Fully hardy, easy to grow, and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, it is an exceptionally versatile shrub equally at home as a specimen, a hedging plant, or a structural anchor in a mixed border.
Growing conditions
Position. 'Eve Price' is accommodating in its requirements and will grow well in full sun, partial shade, or even fairly deep shade — a degree of flexibility that sets it apart from many flowering shrubs. A bright, open position will encourage the most prolific flowering and the richest bud colouring, but it remains a reliable performer even in shadier corners where few other flowering evergreens would thrive. It tolerates exposed sites reasonably well and is a good choice for coastal gardens, where its wind tolerance comes into its own.
Soil. This viburnum is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, chalk, and sandy soils, provided conditions are not waterlogged. It prefers moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil and performs equally well in slightly acidic, neutral, or mildly alkaline conditions. Avoid permanently wet or poorly drained ground, as prolonged waterlogging can cause root problems over time.
Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout the British Isles and most of northern Europe, 'Eve Price' requires no winter protection once established. It is among the more cold-tolerant of the laurustinus cultivars and will come through even harsh winters largely unscathed, with the flower display continuing in succession whenever mild spells allow.
Care
Watering. Water regularly throughout the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong and extensive root system. Once settled, 'Eve Price' is reasonably drought-tolerant, though a thorough watering during prolonged dry spells in summer will keep the foliage looking fresh and support the development of the following season's flower buds.
Feeding and mulching. Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy, vigorous growth and a generous flowering display. A mulch of well-rotted garden compost or bark chippings applied around the base each spring will help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and gradually improve the soil over time. Pruning. 'Eve Price' requires minimal pruning and is naturally inclined to form a neat, rounded shape without much intervention. If tidying or light shaping is required, the best time to carry this out is immediately after the main flush of flowering in late spring, before the new growing season gets fully under way. This preserves the developing buds for the following winter's display. Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems cleanly at the base, and trim lightly to maintain the desired outline. For use as a hedge or screen, it responds well to a gentle clip after flowering and can be kept to a defined shape with ease. Every few years, removing one or two of the oldest stems at ground level will help keep the plant vigorous and encourage fresh new growth from the base.
Pests and diseases. 'Eve Price' is generally robust and largely trouble-free in a garden setting. Viburnum beetle can occasionally affect the foliage, with larvae causing characteristic holes in the leaves from early summer onwards; affected growth can be pruned out and disposed of, and encouraging natural predators such as birds will help keep populations in check. Aphids may colonise soft new growth in spring and can be dealt with by hand or with a gentle insecticidal soap spray. Powdery mildew can occasionally appear during hot, dry summers, particularly where air circulation is poor; choosing an open position and avoiding excessive feeding with high-nitrogen fertilisers will reduce the risk significantly.

With its compact, rounded habit and long season of winter interest, 'Eve Price' makes an excellent specimen shrub and a reliable structural presence in a mixed or evergreen border. Its neat form means it sits comfortably in formal and informal schemes alike, providing solid evergreen substance throughout the year while delivering its floral display precisely when the garden needs it most.
Hedging and screening. 'Eve Price' is one of the finest choices for a flowering evergreen hedge. Dense, wind-tolerant, and willing to grow in shade, it creates a highly effective screen or boundary planting that provides year-round privacy without ever looking dull. It can be kept neatly clipped or allowed to develop a more relaxed, billowing form depending on the desired aesthetic.
Winter garden schemes. As a winter-flowering shrub, 'Eve Price' pairs beautifully with other plants of the colder months. Combine it with the vivid stem colour of Cornus alba cultivars, the sculptural form of Mahonia, and the nodding flowers of hellebores for a border that looks genuinely considered and purposeful throughout winter. Underplant with snowdrops, winter aconites, or early Cyclamen coum to carry interest right down to ground level beneath its evergreen canopy.
