Tetradium daniellii, also known as the Bee Bee Tree or Korean Evodia, is a medium-sized deciduous tree admired for its attractive foliage, late-summer flowers, and exceptional value to pollinators. It produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers in mid to late summer, when few other trees are in bloom. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making it a superb choice for wildlife gardens. The glossy, dark green leaves turn golden-yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Mature trees can reach up to 10–15 metres in height.
Late-season flowering – Provides vital nectar and pollen for pollinators in mid to late summer, when many other sources are scarce.
Attractive foliage and form – Large, glossy leaves create a lush canopy that offers dappled shade and turns a golden hue in autumn.
Wildlife-friendly – A magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Also provides shelter for birds and beneficial insects.
Low-maintenance – Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care, making it suitable for a variety of garden settings.
Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Choose a sheltered location with room to grow.
Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil. Tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including loam and clay, provided drainage is adequate.
Watering: Water young trees regularly during dry spells. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant.
Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Prune in winter to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain a healthy shape.
Feeding: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support growth and flowering.
Mulching: Add mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pollinator planting – Pair with late-summer perennials such as echinacea, rudbeckia, and verbena to create a haven for bees and butterflies.
Ornamental companions – Works well with other small trees like Amelanchier, Cercis, or Sorbus for a layered canopy effect.
Autumn colour – Combine with trees and shrubs that offer contrasting autumn foliage, such as Liquidambar or Euonymus alatus.
Tetradium daniellii is a valuable and attractive addition to wildlife-friendly and ornamental gardens. With its late blooms, handsome foliage, and ease of care, it brings both beauty and ecological benefit to any outdoor space.
