Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ – Reliable Late-Season Sedum with Lasting Colour
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is one of the most dependable and widely grown late-flowering perennials, valued for its long season of interest and excellent garden performance. The fleshy, blue-green foliage forms neat clumps through spring and summer, creating strong texture even before flowering begins.
In late summer, large flattened flower heads emerge soft pink before gradually deepening to rich bronze-red and copper tones as autumn progresses. This changing colour provides exceptional seasonal interest, extending well beyond the peak flowering period.
The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Even after flowering, the dried seed heads remain decorative through winter, adding structure and texture to the garden.
Its upright, compact habit makes it ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, and prairie-style planting, where it combines beautifully with ornamental grasses and other drought-tolerant perennials.
Thriving in full sun, Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ prefers free-draining soil and performs particularly well in dry conditions once established. Hardy, resilient, and extremely low maintenance, it requires very little care beyond cutting back old stems in late winter or early spring.
Reliable, architectural, and full of late-season colour, Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is an essential perennial for extending interest into autumn and winter.
