Echinacea purpurea - Purple Coneflower

A classic and much-loved hardy perennial that has earned its place in gardens worldwide. Echinacea purpurea produces a generous succession of bold, daisy-like flowers with distinctive raised central cones, bringing rich colour, wildlife value, and enduring garden character from midsummer well into autumn.

Seasonal Highlights

From midsummer through to early autumn, sturdy upright stems carry large flowers with swept-back rosy-purple petals surrounding prominent, spiny copper-brown central cones. As flowering winds down, the attractive seedheads remain, providing striking architectural structure through winter while offering a valuable food source for birds.

Key Features

  • Bold rosy-purple flowers with prominent copper-brown cones
  • Long flowering period from midsummer to autumn
  • Fully hardy to -15°C
  • Outstanding magnet for bees and butterflies
  • Decorative winter seedheads attractive to birds
  • Drought tolerant once established
  • Excellent long-lasting cut flower

Perfect For

Sunny mixed borders, cottage gardens, prairie-style and naturalistic plantings, wildlife gardens, and cutting gardens. Equally at home in informal country schemes or more contemporary perennial borders where its bold flowers and strong form create lasting impact.

Growing Tips

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; Echinacea purpurea tolerates a range of soil types but dislikes prolonged waterlogging, particularly over winter. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season, or allow later flowers to set seed for winter wildlife interest. Cut stems back in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Divide established clumps every three to four years in spring to maintain vigour. Apply a mulch of organic matter in spring. Water during dry spells while establishing; once settled, plants are notably drought tolerant.

Looks Great With

Stunning alongside ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum or Stipa, and pairs beautifully with rudbeckias, heleniums, and agastache in warm-toned schemes. Plant with purple Verbena bonariensis or Salvia nemorosa for rich tonal contrasts, or soften with silver artemisia and ornamental grasses in naturalistic prairie-inspired plantings.

A timeless garden essential offering months of rich colour, exceptional wildlife value, and year-round interest, all with remarkably little effort required.
