Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ – Elegant Spires of Deep Purple for Pollinator-Friendly Borders

Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ is a standout perennial famed for its striking vertical spires of rich violet-blue flowers held on dramatic dark purple-black stems. Flowering from early summer well into autumn, this award-winning salvia brings height, contrast, and movement to any sunny border. Compact, drought-tolerant, and adored by pollinators, ‘Caradonna’ is a must-have for contemporary, cottage, or wildlife-friendly garden designs.

Why Grow Salvia ‘Caradonna’?

Architectural Colour Spikes
Tall, upright flower stems contrast beautifully with the soft green foliage, creating bold vertical accents that add rhythm and structure to borders.

Long Flowering Season
From June to October, ‘Caradonna’ delivers a generous and long-lasting floral display. Regular deadheading keeps the show going strong.

Dark Stems for Dramatic Impact
Its signature purple-black stems enhance the intensity of the violet blooms and create a beautiful contrast with lighter perennials and grasses.

Loved by Pollinators
Rich in nectar, this variety attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it a fantastic addition to a biodiverse garden.

Low-Maintenance & Drought-Tolerant
Once established, ‘Caradonna’ is highly resilient in dry soils and requires little input, making it ideal for low-care planting schemes.

Where to Grow Salvia ‘Caradonna’

  • Sunny perennial borders

  • Gravel or Mediterranean-style gardens

  • Wildlife-friendly planting schemes

  • Containers and raised beds

  • Mixed borders with ornamental grasses and soft perennials

How to Grow and Care for Salvia ‘Caradonna’

Soil – Well-drained soil is essential. Tolerates poor, sandy, or chalky soils.

Light – Thrives in full sun. Too much shade can reduce flowering.

Watering – Water during dry spells in the first season; established plants need minimal watering.

Pruning – Deadhead regularly to prolong blooming. Cut back hard in early spring to encourage strong new growth.

Feeding – Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to boost flowering performance.

Winter Care – Hardy in the UK. Mulch around the base in colder regions for added protection.

Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ offers powerful colour, movement, and pollinator appeal with minimal fuss. Its elegant upright form makes it the perfect companion to looser, airy perennials like Verbena bonariensis, Gaura, or Nepeta. Whether in formal planting schemes or relaxed prairie-style borders, ‘Caradonna’ is a reliable and striking performer season after season.
