Koelreuteria paniculata (Golden Rain Tree)

Ornamental, elegant, and full of character, Koelreuteria paniculata, the Golden Rain Tree, is a small deciduous tree prized for its dramatic seasonal displays. It’s a true “four-season” tree, offering beauty from spring right through to autumn.

In midsummer, mature trees are covered in large, airy panicles of golden-yellow flowers, which cascade down like fireworks – a spectacular sight that gives the tree its common name. These are followed by unusual lantern-like seed pods, flushed pink-bronze, that hang decoratively into autumn.

The foliage is just as eye-catching: divided leaves emerge pink-bronze in spring, mature to a fresh green in summer, and then turn warm shades of yellow and orange in autumn. Compact in size, with a naturally rounded crown, it’s perfect for smaller gardens where year-round interest is needed.
