Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Spades' – Deep Purple Foliage on a Compact Eastern Redbud

Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Spades' is a truly striking ornamental shrub or small tree that makes an immediate and lasting impression in the garden. In early spring, before a single leaf has unfurled, the bare stems are smothered in clusters of vivid, pea-like, magenta-pink flowers – a breathtaking seasonal spectacle that arrives just when colour is most welcome. As the flowers fade, the real drama begins: large, heart-shaped leaves emerge in an exceptionally deep, near-black purple, some of the darkest foliage seen on any redbud variety.

What sets 'Ace of Spades' apart is not just the intensity of its leaf colour, but also its distinctly rounded, almost perfectly heart-shaped leaf form – broader and more pronounced than the species, creating a bold, lush texture throughout the growing season. The dark foliage holds well into summer, making it an extraordinary presence in the border or as a standalone specimen. In autumn, the leaves soften to warm tones before falling to reveal a handsome, architectural framework for winter. Compact and naturally well-shaped, 'Ace of Spades' is as refined as it is dramatic.

Why Choose Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Spades'?

  • Exceptionally Dark Foliage – Deep, near-black purple leaves are among the richest and most intense of any redbud in cultivation, providing season-long drama.

  • Stunning Spring Blossom – Vivid magenta-pink flowers smother bare branches in early spring, offering a spectacular early-season display.

  • Bold Leaf Form – Unusually large, rounded, heart-shaped leaves create a lush, textural impact throughout spring and summer.

  • Compact and Manageable – A naturally tidy habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, borders, and courtyard planting.

  • Wildlife Friendly – Early spring flowers provide a valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinators emerging after winter.

  • Year-Round Interest – From spring blossom to summer foliage, autumn colour, and winter structure, this is a four-season garden plant.

Seasonal Highlights

Early Spring: Clusters of bright magenta-pink, pea-like flowers bloom profusely along bare stems before the leaves appear.
Spring–Summer: Exceptionally large, deep purple to near-black, heart-shaped leaves emerge and hold their rich colour through the growing season.
Autumn: Foliage transitions to warm amber and gold tones before leaf fall.
Winter: The clean, branching framework provides elegant architectural structure in the dormant garden.

Position & Soil

Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. A sunny position will encourage the richest, darkest foliage colour and the most prolific flowering display. Light dappled shade is tolerated but may result in slightly less intense leaf pigmentation.

Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. 'Ace of Spades' will adapt to a range of soil types including loam and clay, provided drainage is reasonable. Avoid waterlogged or poorly draining ground, particularly over winter, as this can stress the roots and reduce vigour.

Shelter: A position with some shelter from cold, drying winds is beneficial, especially for younger plants. The early spring flowers can be caught by late frosts, so a sheltered spot will help protect the blossom where possible.

Care & Maintenance

Watering: Water regularly throughout the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong, deep root system. Once settled, 'Ace of Spades' is moderately drought-tolerant, though watering during prolonged dry periods will maintain healthy foliage quality and vigour.

Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support robust growth and encourage a generous flowering display. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flower production.

Mulching: Mulch around the base each spring with well-rotted organic matter to retain soil moisture, regulate root temperature, and suppress competing weeds. Keep mulch clear of the main stem to prevent rot at the base.

Pruning: Little regular pruning is needed. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches during late winter while the plant is dormant. Where light shaping is required, this is best carried out immediately after flowering to avoid disrupting the following season's blossom. Avoid heavy or hard pruning, as redbuds can be slow to recover from significant cuts and do not always respond well to severe reduction.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Specimen planting – Use as a bold, standalone focal point in a lawn or open border, where the near-black foliage and spring blossom can be fully appreciated from a distance.

  • Dark foliage schemes – Combine with other deep or rich-coloured foliage plants such as Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' or
