Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Vivileg’ (Pleached Wall Frame) – Year-Round Privacy with Silvery Gloss and Golden Glow

Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Vivileg’, commonly known as Elaeagnus ‘Viveleg’, is a bold evergreen with large, glossy green leaves splashed with golden yellow and backed by a silvery sheen. Grown in a pleached wall frame, this tough, fast-growing variety offers an attractive, living screen that provides instant structure and privacy. Its shimmering foliage, resilience, and easy maintenance make it an excellent choice for both modern and traditional garden designs.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

• Bright new foliage emerges, displaying rich golden-yellow centres and green margins.

• The plant fills out rapidly, quickly covering the pleached frame with fresh, glossy leaves.

• A great time to prune lightly and encourage bushiness and shape.

Summer:

• The foliage matures into a vibrant display of yellow-gold and green, catching the sunlight with a luminous effect.

• Forms a thick, attractive screen that offers full privacy and a sense of enclosure.

• Hardy and tolerant of drought and salt-laden winds, ideal for exposed spots.

Autumn:

• Tiny, powerfully fragrant silvery-white flowers may appear in the leaf axils, adding a surprising burst of scent.

• The golden foliage holds strong, offering brightness even as other plants fade.

• Growth may slow slightly as temperatures drop, but the evergreen screen remains intact.

Winter:

• Fully evergreen and wind-resistant, providing year-round coverage and interest.

• Foliage continues to shine through dull weather, with silvery undersides catching the light.

• A practical and attractive alternative to traditional evergreen hedging.

Structure & Form

• Form: Flat, rectangular canopy of evergreen foliage, neatly trained on horizontal wires—ideal for screening above walls or fences.

• Growth Habit: Fast-growing and dense, forming an excellent visual barrier in just a few seasons.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

• Privacy Screens: Use along boundaries or patios to block views and enhance garden seclusion.

• Urban Gardens: Well-suited to city gardens where evergreen colour and vertical structure are needed.

• Modern Landscapes: Striking foliage offers a bold, contemporary feel against rendered walls or metal fencing.

• Coastal & Exposed Areas: Excellent wind and salt tolerance makes it ideal for seaside gardens or open rural sites.

Growing Conditions & Care

• Position: Thrives in full sun or partial shade. Colour is most vivid in brighter light, but it tolerates shade well.

• Soil: Adapts to most well-drained soils, including poor or dry ground.

• Maintenance: Clip 1–2 times a year to maintain the flat, pleached shape. Feed annually in spring with a general fertiliser to support vigorous growth.

• Hardiness: Very hardy and wind-tolerant across the UK, with excellent disease and pest resistance.
