Choisya ternata 'Sundance' – Golden Mexican Orange Blossom

Choisya ternata 'Sundance' is a striking evergreen shrub prized for its vivid golden-yellow foliage that illuminates the garden throughout the year. Unlike many gold-leaved shrubs, 'Sundance' holds its bright colour reliably across all seasons, making it one of the most eye-catching evergreens available for temperate gardens. In late spring, clusters of sweetly scented white flowers emerge against the golden leaves, creating a beautiful contrast that also attracts bees and other pollinators.

With its naturally rounded, bushy habit and low-maintenance nature, 'Sundance' is equally at home as a bold specimen plant, a colourful addition to mixed borders, or a cheerful backdrop to other plantings. Hardy, adaptable, and reliably bright, it delivers year-round structure and colour with minimal effort.

Why Choose Choisya ternata 'Sundance'?

Year-Round Golden Foliage – Vivid, warm yellow leaves provide a striking focal point in every season.

Fragrant White Flowers – Sweetly scented blooms appear in late spring, often with a second flush later in the year.

Pollinator-Friendly – Nectar-rich flowers attract bees and hoverflies, supporting garden wildlife.

Compact, Rounded Habit – Forms a neat, dense shrub with minimal intervention.

Hardy and Low Maintenance – Tolerant of most temperate conditions and easy to grow once established.

Habit & Appearance

  • Foliage: Glossy, palmate leaves divided into three leaflets, held in a rich golden-yellow that is brightest in full sun. Leaves release a pleasant citrus scent when crushed.

  • Flowers: Clusters of small, star-shaped white blooms with a sweet orange-blossom fragrance, appearing in late spring and sometimes again in late summer or early autumn.

  • Form: Naturally bushy and rounded, providing excellent structure and year-round presence in the garden.

Where to Site Your Choisya 'Sundance'

  • Borders: Use as a bold splash of golden colour among green or dark-leaved shrubs.

  • Specimen Planting: Striking when grown as a standalone focal point in a lawn or gravel garden.

  • Patios & Containers: Excellent near seating areas where its scented flowers and bright foliage can be fully appreciated.

  • Mixed Shrub Plantings: Contrasts beautifully with purple-leaved shrubs such as Cotinus or dark-leaved Heuchera.

  • Low Hedging: Can be lightly clipped to form a soft, informal hedge or boundary planting.

Growing Conditions

Position – Full sun to partial shade. Foliage colour is most vivid and intense in full sun; in deeper shade the leaves may take on a lime-green hue. Provide some shelter from cold, drying winds in exposed gardens.

Soil – Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil. Tolerates a range of soil types, including chalk, loam, and sandy soils, but dislikes waterlogged or very heavy clay ground.

Hardiness – Hardy in most UK and temperate European gardens. In colder or more exposed regions, planting against a warm wall or fence will offer additional protection.

Watering – Water regularly during the establishment period. Once mature, 'Sundance' is reasonably drought-tolerant, though a thorough watering during prolonged dry spells will keep it looking its best.

Care & Maintenance

Feeding – Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering, particularly on poorer soils. A mulch of well-rotted compost around the base in spring will also help conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.

Pruning – 'Sundance' requires very little pruning to maintain its attractive rounded shape. Lightly trim after flowering to tidy the plant, remove any wayward stems, and encourage bushiness. Avoid cutting back hard into old wood, as recovery can be slow. Any frost-damaged shoots should be removed in spring once new growth begins.

Mulching – Apply a layer of mulch in spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots during cold snaps.

Pests & Diseases – Generally trouble-free and resistant to most common pests and diseases, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • Dark-Leaved Shrubs: Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' or dark Physocarpus for striking colour contrast.
