Why Grow Delphinium ‘Black Knight’?
Dramatic Deep-Purple Blooms – Tall, densely packed flower spikes in a sumptuous dark purple with nearly black centres make a bold statement in any garden.
Towering Presence – Reaching up to 1.5–1.8m tall, ‘Black Knight’ creates a stunning vertical accent, perfect for the back of borders.
Pollinator Magnet – Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds adore its nectar-rich flowers, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Classic Cottage Garden Charm – A must-have for traditional cottage gardens, mixed perennial borders, or alongside roses for a timeless, romantic look.
Perfect for Cutting – Long, elegant flower spikes make fantastic cut flowers for dramatic indoor arrangements.
Where to Site Your Delphinium ‘Black Knight’
Delphiniums thrive in sheltered positions with full sun and well-drained soil. Ideal for the back of borders, against fences, or as a striking focal point, ‘Black Knight’ pairs beautifully with lighter-hued flowers like Echinacea, Roses, and Foxgloves for a dreamy, layered effect.
How to Grow and Care for Your Delphinium ‘Black Knight’
Soil – Prefers rich, well-drained soil with added organic matter. Delphiniums thrive in slightly alkaline to neutral soil.
Light – Best in full sun, though they appreciate some afternoon shade in hotter climates.
Watering – Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells.
Maintenance:
-
Staking Required – Due to its tall growth, staking early in the season prevents wind damage.
-
Deadhead & Cut Back – Removing spent flower spikes can encourage a second flush of blooms later in summer.
-
Mulch & Feed – Apply mulch in spring and feed regularly with a high-potassium fertilizer to promote strong, healthy growth.
-
Winter Care – Cut back after flowering and protect roots with mulch over winter.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Delphinium ‘Black Knight’ pairs beautifully with pale pink Roses, white Shasta Daisies, Foxgloves, and airy Gypsophila for a classic English garden look. For a bold contrast, plant alongside golden Rudbeckia, silvery Artemisia, or deep blue Salvia.
