Nepeta faassenii ‘Six Hills Giant’ – A Bold and Elegant Addition to Your Garden

Nepeta faassenii ‘Six Hills Giant is a striking, larger variety of catmint that offers both bold visual appeal and a long blooming period. Known for its tall, upright growth and abundant lavender-blue flowers, this cultivar creates a commanding presence in the garden. Its aromatic, gray-green foliage complements the soft, aromatic blooms, making it a standout choice for herb gardens, pollinator-friendly landscapes, and sunny borders. With its vigorous growth habit and drought tolerance, ‘Six Hills Giant’ is as low-maintenance as it is beautiful, making it a perfect addition to any garden seeking vibrant color and fragrance throughout the summer.

Why Grow Nepeta faassenii ‘Six Hills Giant’?

  • Bold, Upright Growth – ‘Six Hills Giant’ is a larger variety of Nepeta, growing to about 40/60cm tall, with an upright habit that adds structure and height to your garden, making it an excellent choice for the middle or back of borders.
  • Long-Blooming – This variety produces an abundance of soft lavender-blue flowers from late spring through summer, continuing to bloom well into fall, providing months of color and interest.
  • Pollinator-Friendly – The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making ‘Six Hills Giant’ an essential choice for pollinator gardens and wildlife-friendly plantings.
  • Fragrant Foliage – In addition to its striking flowers, the plant has aromatic, gray-green foliage that adds a subtle fragrance to the garden, especially when brushed or disturbed.
  • Low Maintenance & Drought Tolerant – Once established, ‘Six Hills Giant’ is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance or xeriscape gardens.

Where to Site Your Nepeta faassenii ‘Six Hills Giant’?

Thrives in full sun but will also tolerate light shade, though it will bloom more prolifically in sunnier locations. It prefers well-drained soil and is highly adaptable to a range of soil types, including poor or dry soils. This variety is perfect for the middle or back of borders where its height can provide structure and visual interest. It also works well as a specimen plant in herb gardens or as part of a pollinator-friendly garden. Plant it in mass for a dramatic effect, or mix it with other sun-loving plants such as Echinacea, Coreopsis, Salvia, or Rudbeckia for a vibrant and colorful display. ‘Six Hills Giant’ can also be used as a backdrop to smaller plants, where it adds height and depth while still remaining relatively compact at the base.

How to Grow and Care for Your Nepeta faassenii ‘Six Hills Giant’

  • Soil – Prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral soil but is tolerant of poor or dry conditions once established. Adding compost will improve soil structure and fertility.
  • Light – Grows best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. More sunlight will result in denser blooms and a more compact habit.
  • Watering – Once established, ‘Six Hills Giant’ is highly drought-tolerant. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot.

Maintenance:

  • Deadheading & Cleanup – Regular deadheading of spent flowers will encourage more blooms and help keep the plant looking tidy. After the first flush of flowers, trim back the plant to maintain its shape and encourage a second round of blooms later in the season.
  • Mulch & Feed – Apply mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool. Nepeta does not require much feeding, but a balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring will support robust growth.
  • Pruning – After the first round of blooms, trim back the plant by about a third to keep it tidy and encourage fresh growth. In late fall, cut the plant back to the ground to prepare for winter.
  • Division – Every 2-3 years, divide ‘Six Hills Giant’ to prevent overcrowding and maintain its vigor. The best time for division is in early spring or fall, before the plant starts its active growth.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Pairs well with a variety of sun-loving plants, making it a versatile choice for borders, cottage gardens, or pollinator-friendly landscapes. Its tall, upright growth provides a beautiful backdrop for smaller, shorter plants. For a colorful and vibrant border, pair it with plants like Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Coreopsis, or Phlox, where its lavender-blue flowers create a soft contrast with the bold, warm tones of other perennials. The plant also looks stunning when combined with ornamental grasses such as Pennisetum, Miscanthus, or Fountain Grass, where its upright form complements the texture and movement of the grasses. For a more tranquil, pastel-toned planting scheme, combine ‘Six Hills Giant’ with other cool-toned plants like Salvia (especially Salvia nemorosa varieties), Lavender, or Shasta Daisy for a soothing, harmonious look. It also pairs beautifully with other aromatic plants such as Thyme, Oregano, or Lavender, which will enhance the sensory experience of your garden with fragrance and texture. ‘Six Hills Giant’ is also a great choice for creating wildlife corridors, as it attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds when planted alongside other nectar-rich plants.
