Corylus avellana 'Red Majestic', commonly known as the Corkscrew hazel, is a truly spectacular deciduous shrub that combines two outstanding qualities in one plant: dramatically twisted, contorted stems and rich, deep burgundy-red foliage. In late winter, the bare corkscrew branches are draped in delicate, pendulous catkins that sway in the breeze, offering early interest long before the leaves appear. As spring arrives, striking red-purple leaves unfurl, deepening in colour as the season progresses and creating a bold, eye-catching statement throughout summer. Growing conditions

Position – Corylus avellana 'Red Majestic' thrives in full sun to partial shade. The best foliage colour is achieved in a sunny spot, where the burgundy-red tones remain vibrant and intense throughout the growing season.

Soil – This shrub is adaptable to most soil types but performs best in a fertile, moist yet well-drained soil. It tolerates slightly acidic to neutral conditions and is not suited to waterlogged ground. Incorporating organic matter into the planting hole will help to get it off to a strong start.

Hardiness – Fully hardy across the UK, 'Red Majestic' is a robust and reliable garden shrub requiring no winter protection once established.

Care

Watering – Keep the plant well watered during dry periods in its first season while it establishes. Once settled in, it is reasonably drought tolerant, though a thorough watering during prolonged dry spells will keep the foliage looking its best.

Feeding – Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and encourage strong new shoots. A mulch of well-rotted compost around the base each spring will also help retain moisture and improve soil condition over time.

Pruning – Prune in late winter to early spring, before the new season's growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged or overcrowded stems to maintain an open, attractive structure and allow the distinctive contorted branches to be fully appreciated. Hard renovation pruning can be carried out if the shrub becomes too large, as it responds well to cutting back. Take care to remove any plain green-leaved shoots arising from the rootstock promptly, as these vigorous suckers can outcompete the named variety if left unchecked.

Wildlife value – The early catkins provide a valuable source of pollen for bees and other pollinators emerging in late winter. Any nuts produced in autumn are eagerly taken by birds, squirrels and small mammals, making 'Red Majestic' a rewarding addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
