Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’ – Elegant Blooms with Delicate Pink Hues

Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’ is a charming and compact ornamental dogwood variety prized for its beautiful late spring flowers and striking autumn colour. Its large, creamy-white bracts are uniquely tinged with a gentle pink flush, creating a soft and romantic floral display that enhances any garden setting.

Following flowering, ‘Satomi’ produces bright red, raspberry-like berries that attract wildlife and add interest throughout summer and early autumn. The glossy green foliage turns vibrant shades of red and purple in autumn, providing a stunning seasonal transformation.

Growing to around 4–6 metres tall, ‘Satomi’ is well suited to smaller gardens, patios, or as a specimen tree in mixed borders. It prefers well-drained fertile soil with a sunny or partially shaded, sheltered position to encourage best flowering and autumn colour.

Why Choose Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’?

  • Soft Pink-Tinged Bracts – Elegant late spring flowers with subtle colour.

  • Bright Red Berries – Decorative and wildlife-friendly.

  • Striking Autumn Foliage – Glossy leaves turn fiery red and purple.

  • Compact Growth – Ideal for smaller gardens or containers.

Planting & Care Guide

Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil preferred.

Watering: Regular watering, especially when young or during dry periods.

Feeding: Balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring promotes healthy growth.

Pruning: Minimal pruning needed; remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Feature as a specimen tree in small gardens or patios.

  • Pair with spring bulbs and shade-loving perennials for layered interest.

  • Combine with evergreens for year-round structure and contrast.

  • Great for wildlife gardens as the berries attract birds.
