About Clerodendrum Trichotomum Fargesii 20 Litre 150/175cm

Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii – Farges Harlequin Glorybower

Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii, commonly known as the Farges harlequin glorybower, is a truly spectacular large shrub or small tree that delivers a dazzling two-season display. In late summer, clusters of sweetly fragrant white flowers emerge from eye-catching crimson-pink calyces, attracting bees and butterflies in abundance. As autumn approaches, the flowers give way to vivid turquoise-blue berries cradled within the persistent, star-shaped red calyces — a jewel-like combination that is simply unlike anything else in the garden.

This elegant variety is slightly more refined than the straight species, producing smoother, less pungent foliage and a cleaner overall appearance. It develops an open, multi-stemmed habit with broad, oval to heart-shaped leaves that provide a lush, generous canopy through the growing season. Given space and favourable conditions, it matures into a graceful specimen that commands attention from late summer well into autumn.

Thriving in a sunny or lightly shaded position with shelter from cold, drying winds, Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii performs best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It is reasonably hardy once established, though young plants benefit from some protection during hard frosts. Its combination of fragrant flowers, striking berries, and bold foliage makes it a true four-season asset in the right setting.

Why Choose Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii?

  • Fragrant Late-Summer Flowers – Sweetly scented white blooms held in rich crimson calyces.

  • Spectacular Autumn Berries – Vivid turquoise-blue fruits contrast brilliantly with the star-shaped red calyces.

  • Wildlife Magnet – Flowers attract pollinators; berries draw birds into the garden.

  • Refined Variety – Cleaner, smoother foliage than the species, ideal for more formal plantings.

  • Extended Garden Interest – Earns its place from late summer right through to autumn.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Full sun to light dappled shade; sheltered from cold winds and late frosts.

Soil: Moist, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil; tolerates a range of soil types once drainage is adequate.

Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first few seasons while establishing. Once settled, it is reasonably drought tolerant.

Feeding: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support vigorous growth and flowering.

Pruning: Little pruning is needed to maintain its natural form. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in early spring. Older stems can be selectively thinned to open up the canopy and encourage fresh, flowering growth.

Winter Care: Established plants are reasonably hardy, but a mulch of well-rotted compost or bark around the base in autumn will protect the roots during colder spells.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Use as a bold specimen shrub in a mixed border where its autumn berries can take centre stage.

  • Plant against a warm, sheltered wall to maximise flowering and provide winter protection.

  • Combine with late-flowering perennials such as salvias or rudbeckias to create a rich late-season display.

  • Pair with ornamental grasses or silver-leaved shrubs to complement the vivid berry and calyx colour combination.

  • Allow to develop as a small multi-stemmed tree at the back of a border or as a focal point in a courtyard garden.
