Clerodendrum also known as Glorybower

A diverse genus of flowering plants that can bring a range of exotic and ornamental qualities to UK gardens. Some species within this genus are known for their vibrant flowers, aromatic foliage, and attractive berries, making them ideal for adding interest and color to both formal and informal garden designs.

Clerodendrum trichotomum is the most suitable for outdoor planting in the UK, with its hardiness, fragrant flowers, and colorful berries making it a popular choice for late-season interest

Where To Site Your Clerodendrum

This vine prefers bright, indirect light, well-drained soil, and high humidity. It can be trained up trellises or other supports in conservatories or grown in hanging baskets for a cascading effect.

Care and Maintenance for Clerodendrum in the UK

  • Sheltered Location: For outdoor species, especially in colder regions, plant Clerodendrum in a sheltered spot, such as against a south-facing wall or in a protected corner of the garden. This helps shield the plant from harsh winter winds and frost.
  • Watering: Ensure the plant receives consistent moisture during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and protect the roots during winter.
  • Pruning: Prune after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged wood.
  • Winter Protection: In colder areas, consider applying a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant in autumn to protect the roots from frost. More tender species like C. ugandense or C. thomsoniae should be moved indoors or covered during winter.
  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Clerodendrum species are generally pest-resistant but can occasionally suffer from aphids or spider mites, especially when grown indoors or in greenhouses. Keeping the plants healthy and ensuring good air circulation can minimize problems
