Clematis 'Avalanche' - Clematis

Clematis × cartmanii 'Avalanche' is a truly outstanding evergreen clematis that puts on a breathtaking show of pure white flowers in early spring. Unlike most clematis, this exceptional variety retains its deeply divided, fern-like foliage year-round, providing structure and interest through every season. When in bloom, the stems are smothered in masses of small, star-shaped white flowers, creating a cascading cloud of blossom that is quite unlike any other clematis.

Seasonal Highlights

Late winter to early spring is when 'Avalanche' truly comes into its own, producing an extraordinary abundance of glistening white flowers that smother the plant from top to bottom. Each bloom is delicate and star-shaped, held against the intricate, deeply cut evergreen foliage that resembles fine lacework. Outside of the flowering season, the rich, dark green ferny leaves continue to earn their place, providing year-round texture and interest on walls, fences and structures.

Key Features

  • Masses of pure white star-shaped flowers in late winter and early spring
  • Attractive evergreen foliage with deeply divided, fern-like leaves
  • Vigorous and free-flowering habit
  • Excellent year-round structure and foliage interest
  • Fully hardy and reliable in sheltered positions

Perfect For

Ideal for training across walls, fences, pergolas and trellis where its evergreen foliage can be appreciated all year. Perfect for covering unsightly structures quickly and effectively. Works beautifully in sheltered courtyards and walled gardens where it is protected from the harshest winds. An excellent choice for gardeners seeking early-season colour when little else is in flower.

Growing Conditions

Best positioned in a sheltered spot with protection from cold, drying winds, as the evergreen foliage can be damaged by severe frost and wind scorch. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. As with all clematis, keep the roots cool and shaded by mulching generously or planting low-growing plants at the base.

Care

Pruning requirements are minimal — this is a Group 1 clematis that flowers on the previous year's growth, so hard pruning should be avoided. After flowering, lightly trim back any wayward or overcrowded stems to maintain a tidy shape and encourage healthy new growth. Remove any frost-damaged foliage as needed. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to support vigorous growth, and water well during dry spells, particularly in the first season after planting.

Looks Great With

Stunning when grown alongside early spring bulbs such as daffodils or blue Muscari for a classic seasonal combination. Pairs beautifully with dark-leaved evergreen shrubs that throw the white blossom into sharp relief. Combines well with winter-flowering Clematis cirrhosa varieties or early hellebores beneath. A wonderful companion to climbing roses, extending the season of interest on the same structure well beyond the rose's own flowering period.

A spectacular and versatile evergreen clematis, 'Avalanche' brings a dazzling early-season display of white blossom combined with beautiful year-round foliage — a truly rewarding plant for any sheltered garden setting.

Guide to Planting Field-Grown Root Balled Plants

Pros:

  1. Established Roots: Typically stronger, established roots ensure better initial growth.
  2. Immediate Impact: Larger plants provide instant structure and aesthetics.

Cons:

  1. Heavy and Bulky: Can be difficult to transport and plant due to size and weight.
  2. Seasonal Availability: Generally available only in the dormant season (autumn to early spring).

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Unwrap Carefully: Remove any packaging material, but leave the burlap or wire basket on.
  2. Keep plants moist: Plants should be kept moist until the time of planting.

Planting Process:

  1. Dig a Hole: Make a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  2. Position Plant: Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the ground surface.
  3. Do Not Remove Root Sack: Leave the burlap or wire basket around the root ball. It is bio degradable and will rot away naturally.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil and avoid wilting.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Initial Shock: Some plants may suffer transplant shock, leading to potential losses.
  • Mitigation: Proper care and consistent watering during the establishment phase can minimise this risk.

Main Causes of Failure:

  1. Improper Planting Depth: Planting too deep or too shallow can stress the roots.
  2. Poor Soil Conditions: Compacted or poorly drained soil can hinder root growth.
  3. Insufficient Watering: Both under-watering and over-watering can lead to plant stress and failure. Strong wind can dry leafy pants.
  4. Pest and Disease: Lack of protection and monitoring can result in damage from pests and diseases.

Tips for Success:

  1. Stake Larger Plants: Support with stakes to prevent wind damage.
  2. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
  3. Regular Monitoring: Check for signs of stress, pests, and disease, and address them promptly.

By following these guidelines and providing consistent aftercare, you can successfully plant and establish field-grown root balled plants in your garden.
