Wisteria is a lovely woody twining climber with beautiful perfumed flowers. They are one of the more hardy climbers which you can train them to climb up walls and over garden structures. During the summer months your garden will be brightened up with the Wisteria has pinnate green leaves and long pendulous racemes of scented lilac purple flowers, in long racemes in summer, followed by velvety pods.

Wisteria sinensis is a vigorous climbing plant renowned for its cascading clusters of fragrant, lavender-blue flowers that bloom in spring, creating a stunning and romantic display on walls, pergolas, and arbors.

To grow Wisterias is quite straightforward and easy to plant. Wisterias like a sunny spot but will also grow in partial shade, they like well drained soil but will dry out so they need to be kept well watered. It can be pruned twice a year in July/August, all you need to do is cut back any whippy green shoots of the new growth and then in January/February when you cut back the same growths two or three buds.

The Wisteria Sinensis is a stunning deciduous climber known for its cascading clusters of fragrant, lilac-blue flowers. Blooming in late spring to early summer, these long, pendulous flower clusters create a breathtaking display that can transform walls, pergolas, and trellises into a beautiful, floral spectacle. The elegant, twisted stems and lush green foliage of Wisteria Sinensis add architectural interest, making it a popular choice for adding both beauty and structure to garden spaces.

Where to Position Your Wisteria Sinensis

Wisteria Sinensis thrives in a sunny position, ideally with full sun to encourage the best flowering. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from being planted in a sheltered spot to protect its flowers from late frosts. This vigorous climber is perfect for training against walls, over pergolas, or along fences, where it can be allowed to twine and weave its way, creating stunning displays. Regular watering during dry periods will help maintain its health and vigour.

Growth and Maintenance

Wisteria Sinensis is a fast-growing climber that can reach up to 9 metres in height and spread, depending on the support provided. Pruning is essential to control its size and encourage prolific flowering. Prune in late summer to cut back the long, whippy shoots and again in late winter to shape the plant and remove any unwanted growth. With regular pruning, Wisteria Sinensis will produce a more abundant and spectacular display of flowers each year.
