Calycanthus × raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' – Bold Burgundy Blooms with Fruity Fragrance

Calycanthus × raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' is a truly remarkable deciduous shrub that brings a touch of the exotic to gardens of all styles. Bred as a hybrid Carolina allspice, it is celebrated for its extraordinarily large, deep wine-red flowers – each one a swirl of strap-like petals that open in succession from late spring right through to autumn, delivering one of the longest flowering seasons of any hardy shrub. Few plants can match its combination of dramatic colour, sweet fruity fragrance, and sheer reliability.

The foliage is bold and handsome – large, glossy, deep green leaves form a lush, dense canopy that makes an excellent backdrop to the rich blooms. The overall habit is rounded and vigorous, with an upright yet relaxed form that suits a wide range of planting schemes. In autumn, the foliage softens to warm yellow tones before falling, extending the plant's seasonal interest well beyond the flowering period.

'Hartlage Wine' is an adaptable, easy-going shrub that rewards with very little effort. Whether planted as a standalone specimen, anchoring a mixed border, or adding structure to a woodland-style garden, it consistently delivers season after season of colour, fragrance, and elegance.

Why Choose Calycanthus 'Hartlage Wine'?

  • Exceptional Flower Display – Enormous, deep wine-red blooms with an exotic, tropical character.

  • Extended Flowering Season – Blooms generously from late spring through to autumn.

  • Sweet Fruity Fragrance – Delightful scent that fills the air around seating areas and paths.

  • Attractive Foliage – Large, glossy leaves provide lush structure and autumn colour.

  • Low Maintenance – Hardy, adaptable, and requires minimal pruning or attention once established.

Growing Conditions

Position: Calycanthus 'Hartlage Wine' thrives in a position that receives full sun to partial shade. A sunnier spot will encourage the most prolific flowering and the strongest fragrance, though it performs admirably with a few hours of dappled shade each day – making it well suited to the edges of woodland gardens or lightly canopied borders.

Soil: This shrub is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as drainage is reasonable. It prefers a fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Enriching the planting area with well-rotted organic matter before planting will give it an excellent start and help maintain consistent moisture levels through summer.

Hardiness: 'Hartlage Wine' is fully hardy across most of the UK, tolerating cold winters without difficulty. In very exposed or frost-prone sites, a sheltered position against a wall or fence will offer additional protection while also enhancing the fragrance.

Care

Watering: Keep the plant well watered during its first growing season to allow the root system to establish fully. Once settled in, it becomes moderately drought tolerant, though a thorough watering during prolonged dry spells in summer will help sustain flowering and keep the foliage looking its best.

Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as growth begins. A mulch of well-rotted compost or bark chippings around the base in spring will help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide a gentle nutrient boost throughout the season.

Pruning: 'Hartlage Wine' requires very little pruning to look its best. Carry out any shaping or tidying in late winter or early spring before growth resumes – removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain an open, healthy structure. Because it flowers on both old and new wood, light pruning will not compromise the display. Avoid heavy cutting back unless rejuvenation is necessary.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Plant near seating areas or pathways to enjoy the sweet fruity fragrance at close range throughout summer.

  • Use as a bold specimen in a lawn or courtyard where the striking blooms can be fully appreciated.

  • Combine with Hydrangeas and Astilbes in a moisture-retentive border for a lush, layered planting.

  • Pair with ornamental grasses or Heucheras for textural and colour contrast against the deep wine-red flowers.

  • Plant against an evergreen backdrop – such as yew or box hedging – to make the vibrant blooms truly stand out.
