About Berberis thunbergii 'Ruby Star' - Japanese Barberry 3 Litre Pot

Berberis thunbergii 'Ruby Star' - Japanese Barberry

This compact deciduous barberry is celebrated for its deep ruby-red foliage that provides intense colour from spring through autumn. With a neat, rounded habit and excellent hardiness, it's a superb choice for adding dramatic colour to gardens of any size.

Seasonal Highlights

In spring, small yellow flowers provide contrast against the emerging ruby foliage. The rich red tones deepen throughout summer, while autumn brings bright red berries and even more intense leaf colour before the foliage falls.

Key Features

  • Deep ruby-red foliage throughout the season
  • Compact, rounded growth habit
  • Yellow spring flowers
  • Bright red autumn berries
  • Spiny stems for added security

Perfect For

Small gardens, mixed borders, containers, low hedging, and as a striking accent plant. Ideal for adding deep colour to planting schemes and creating bold focal points.

Growing Tips

Plant in any well-drained soil in full sun for the deepest red foliage colour. Tolerates partial shade but colour intensity may reduce. Very drought-tolerant once established. Prune lightly after flowering if needed. Handle with gloves due to spiny stems.

Looks Great With

Plant with silver-foliaged plants such as artemisia or lavender for stunning contrast, or with pink and purple perennials. Combines beautifully with ornamental grasses and spring bulbs for multi-season interest.

A magnificent compact shrub that delivers bold, rich colour and reliable performance year after year.
