Cotoneaster dammeri – Bearberry Cotoneaster

A prostrate, mat-forming evergreen shrub that hugs the ground with remarkable closeness, sending out long, trailing stems clothed in small, rounded, glossy dark green leaves. In early summer the branches are smothered in white flowers beloved by pollinators, followed by a generous crop of bright red berries that persist through autumn and winter, providing vital food for birds. One of the most effective and hardworking groundcover plants available, Cotoneaster dammeri combines year-round foliage, seasonal colour, and extraordinary adaptability with virtually no maintenance.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Fresh new growth extends the trailing stems, deepening the dense evergreen carpet
  • Early Summer: Small white flowers stud every stem, drawing bees and other pollinators in abundance
  • Autumn: Bright red berries ripen in generous clusters along the length of each branch
  • Winter: Glossy evergreen foliage remains intact and berries persist, providing colour and wildlife value through the coldest months

Key Features

  • Extremely low, prostrate habit – stems root as they spread, forming a dense living mulch
  • Fully hardy to -20°C
  • Excellent weed suppression once established
  • Outstanding berry display valued by birds throughout winter
  • Tolerates poor soils, pollution, and coastal exposure
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit

Perfect For

Banks and slopes where erosion control and soil stabilisation are needed, large groundcover areas beneath trees and taller shrubs, trailing over retaining walls and raised bed edges, rock gardens, and low-maintenance landscaping schemes. Particularly effective in difficult spots where little else will thrive, including dry shade and compacted soils.

Growing Tips

Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; tolerates deeper shade than many cotoneasters, though berry production is best in a sunny spot.

Soil: Grows in almost any well-drained soil, including poor, dry, and chalky conditions. Avoid waterlogged ground. Once established it is highly drought tolerant.

Pruning & care: Requires virtually no routine maintenance. Trim back wayward stems in late winter or early spring if spread needs restricting. No regular feeding is necessary, though a light top-dress of general fertiliser in spring can encourage vigorous growth on very poor soils. Naturally layers itself as stems touch the ground, steadily increasing coverage over time.

Hardiness: Fully hardy and suited to exposed, coastal, and urban environments alike.

Looks Great With

Underplant with spring bulbs such as Narcissus or Muscari that push through the foliage for an early-season display. Combine with ornamental grasses like Festuca glauca for textural contrast, or use as a low carpet beneath upright evergreens such as Ilex or Viburnum tinus. The vivid red berries coordinate beautifully with Pyracantha, Skimmia, and winter-flowering heathers for a cohesive, wildlife-friendly planting scheme.

Reliable, resilient, and genuinely multi-season in its appeal, Cotoneaster dammeri is an outstanding choice wherever a tough, low-growing evergreen groundcover is needed – delivering flowers, berries, and year-round foliage with the minimum of effort.
