About Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Ice' - Japanese Barberry 3 Litre Pot

Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Ice' - Japanese Barberry

This stunning deciduous barberry brings a burst of warm colour to the garden with its uniquely variegated foliage in shades of orange, coral, cream, and soft pink. Compact and easy to grow, it creates a vibrant focal point throughout the growing season.

Seasonal Highlights

In spring, small yellow flowers appear among the emerging variegated foliage. The orange and coral tones intensify through summer, while autumn brings bright red berries and deepening leaf colours before the foliage drops for winter.

Key Features

  • Vibrant orange, coral, and cream variegated foliage
  • Compact, manageable size
  • Yellow spring flowers
  • Bright red autumn berries
  • Excellent for adding warm colour tones

Perfect For

Small gardens, mixed borders, containers, low hedging, and as a specimen plant. Ideal for bringing warm, sunny tones to planting schemes and brightening shaded areas nearby.

Growing Tips

Plant in any well-drained soil in full sun for the most vibrant leaf colours. Tolerates partial shade but variegation will be less pronounced. Drought-tolerant once established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Wear gloves when handling.

Looks Great With

Pair with purple or burgundy foliage plants for striking contrast, or with bronze carex and heucheras for a warm colour palette. Plant with spring bulbs and summer perennials for layered interest.

An exceptional shrub that delivers outstanding colour and year-round appeal with very little effort.
