About Berberis ottawensis 'Superba' - Purple Barberry 3 Litre Pot

Berberis ottawensis 'Superba' - Purple Barberry

This vigorous deciduous barberry is prized for its stunning purple-red foliage that provides dramatic colour throughout the growing season. With clusters of yellow spring flowers and vibrant red autumn berries, it offers year-round interest and is exceptionally easy to grow.

Seasonal Highlights

In spring, clusters of small yellow flowers appear, attractive to pollinators. The purple-red foliage deepens through summer, while autumn brings brilliant red berries that persist into winter, providing food for birds.

Key Features

  • Rich purple-red foliage from spring to autumn
  • Yellow spring flowers
  • Bright red autumn berries
  • Spiny stems provide security and wildlife habitat
  • Excellent for hedging or specimen planting

Perfect For

Hedging, mixed borders, wildlife gardens, and as a colourful barrier plant. The spiny stems make it ideal for boundary planting where security is needed.

Growing Tips

Plant in any well-drained soil in full sun for best foliage colour, though tolerates partial shade. Very adaptable and drought-tolerant once established. Prune after flowering if required to maintain shape. Wear gloves when handling due to spines.

Looks Great With

Combine with grey-foliaged plants like lavender or artemisia for contrast, or with golden shrubs such as Choisya 'Sundance' for a vibrant colour combination. Plant with spring bulbs for early season interest.

A robust and rewarding shrub that delivers bold colour and structure with minimal effort.
