Azalea Mollis 'Persil' – White-Flowering Deciduous Azalea

Rhododendron 'Persil', commonly known as Azalea Mollis 'Persil', is a stunning deciduous shrub celebrated for its spectacular spring display of pure white, funnel-shaped flowers, each adorned with a striking golden-yellow flare at the throat. One of the finest white-flowering Mollis azaleas available, 'Persil' also delivers excellent autumn colour as its foliage transforms into warm shades of orange and red before falling, ensuring seasonal interest well beyond its breathtaking spring peak.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Large trusses of brilliant white blooms with a vivid yellow flare emerge before or alongside the new foliage, creating a bold and elegant display.

  • Summer: Fresh mid-green leaves provide a lush, leafy presence throughout the warmer months.

  • Autumn: Foliage turns to rich shades of orange, amber, and red before dropping, extending seasonal garden interest.

  • Winter: An attractive branching framework remains, adding quiet structure to the dormant garden.

Key Features

  • Spectacular white spring blooms – Large, fragrant white flowers with a golden-yellow flare, appearing in impressive trusses.

  • Deciduous habit – Fresh green summer foliage with outstanding autumn colour.

  • Bold seasonal impact – Provides interest from early spring through to autumn.

  • Reliable and hardy – A long-established, robust garden performer.

  • Fragrant flowers – Pleasantly scented blooms add an extra sensory dimension in spring.

Perfect For

  • Mixed borders – Creates a striking focal point with its bold white flowers and colourful autumn foliage.

  • Woodland gardens – Thrives in dappled shade beneath deciduous trees, naturalising beautifully.

  • Specimen planting – Impressive enough to stand alone as a garden centrepiece.

  • Acidic soil gardens – Ideal for gardens with naturally acidic or peaty soil conditions.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in partial shade or dappled sunlight; avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch the blooms and foliage. Shelter from cold, drying winds where possible.

  • Soil: Requires moist, well-drained acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) enriched with organic matter such as leafmould or ericaceous compost. Does not tolerate chalky or alkaline conditions.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, though the flowers can be susceptible to late frost damage — choose a sheltered position to protect the spring blooms.

  • Watering: Keep consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Use rainwater where possible, particularly in hard water areas, to avoid raising soil pH.

  • Feeding & Mulching: Apply a specialist ericaceous fertiliser in spring. Mulch annually with pine bark, leafmould, or ericaceous compost to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity.

  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Deadhead spent flowers carefully to encourage vigour, and lightly shape the plant immediately after flowering if needed. Avoid heavy pruning.

Looks Great With

  • Other Mollis azaleas – Combine with yellow, orange, or pink-flowering varieties such as 'Koster's Brilliant Red' or 'Gibraltar' for a vibrant, multi-coloured spring border.

  • Rhododendrons – Complement with purple, mauve, or deep pink rhododendrons to extend the flowering season and create striking colour contrasts.

  • Pieris japonica – The fiery red new growth of Pieris provides a beautiful contrast against the pure white 'Persil' blooms in spring.

  • Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) – Pair with the delicate foliage of ornamental maples for a refined woodland aesthetic and complementary autumn colour.
