If you’re in search of a low-maintenance garden hedge that combines both aesthetic appeal and practicality, Yew Hedging is an excellent choice.

Yew Hedging (Taxus baccata) is renowned for its dense, evergreen foliage and elegant, dark green appearance. Yew is a versatile and resilient plant that provides a classic and formal look to any garden. It is ideal for creating dense, lush hedges that offer excellent privacy and wind protection. Yew hedging maintains its vibrant colour throughout the year, making it a popular choice for various garden designs.

Types of Yew Hedging

There are several forms of Taxus Hedging but only really Taxus Baccata are mass grown for evergreen hedging. Here are the different types of Yew Hedging and their properties:

Taxus Baccata Hedging: This classic variety is known for its hardiness and adaptability to various soil types and light conditions. It can reach heights of up to 20 meters with a spread of 5 meters, making it suitable for larger spaces.

Taxus Hicksii Hedging: This variety is a popular choice for its upright growth habit and dense foliage. It reaches heights of around 4-5 meters with a spread of 2-2.5 meters, making it ideal for medium-sized hedges.

Taxus Hillii: Hillii is prized for its compact and columnar growth, making it an excellent choice for formal gardens or tight spaces. It grows to a height of approximately 2-3 meters with a spread of 1-1.5 meter

Where to Site Yew Hedging

Yew hedging thrives in well-drained soil and can adapt to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade and can tolerate a range of conditions, including exposed or coastal locations. For optimal growth, ensure the site is well-drained and avoid waterlogged areas. Yew can grow up to 4-5 metres in height, so choose a location that allows for its mature size. When planting, dig a hole slightly deeper and wider than the root ball, position the plant, and backfill with soil, and water thoroughly.

Growth

Yew hedging is known for its slow to moderate growth rate, typically adding 15-30 cm per year. This steady growth rate allows for precise control over the hedge’s size and shape, making it an excellent choice for creating a well-manicured boundary.

Can I Maintain This Type of Hedge?

Yes, Yew hedging is relatively easy to maintain. Regular pruning helps to shape the hedge and maintain its formal appearance. It is recommended to prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Perform additional light trims throughout the growing season as needed to ensure the hedge remains neat and dense.

Caring Tips for Yew Hedging
Watering

Ensure your Yew hedge receives regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water newly planted hedges 2-3 times a week during the summer, while established hedges typically require less frequent watering, around once a week.

Pruning

Regular pruning is essential to maintain shape and control growth. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Remove any dead or diseased wood and thin out overcrowded branches to improve air circulation.

Feeding

Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and maintain the hedge’s lush appearance. A general-purpose feed or slow-release fertiliser is suitable.

Caring Tips for Yew Hedging
Yew Needle Blight

Causes yellowing and browning of needles. Remove and destroy affected branches and improve air circulation. Apply a fungicide if necessary.

Yew Scale

Small, white, or brown bumps on needles. Use horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to treat infestations.

Root Rot

Caused by waterlogged conditions. Ensure proper drainage and avoid planting in excessively wet areas to prevent root rot.
