View full detailsTrachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as star jasmine or Confederate jasmine, is a stunning evergreen climber prized for its glossy, dark green foliage and clusters of beautifully fragrant, star-shaped white flowers. Blooming from early to late summer, it fills the garden with a rich, jasmine-like scent, making it ideal for planting near seating areas, doorways, or pathways where its perfume can be fully appreciated. Its neat, self-twining habit and year-round foliage make it a versatile and elegant choice for covering walls, fences, arches, or pergolas, bringing both beauty and structure to the garden in every season.
Evergreen Foliage – Retains its glossy, deep green leaves throughout the year, adding structure and colour even in winter.
Beautifully Fragrant Flowers – Sweetly scented, starry white blooms cover the plant in summer, filling the air with an intoxicating perfume.
Long-Lasting & Low-Maintenance – A tough, reliable climber that’s easy to care for once established, rewarding with many years of beauty.
Seasonal Interest – Foliage takes on attractive bronze and red tints in colder months, adding extra seasonal charm.
Versatile & Compact – Perfect for small gardens, courtyards, or patios, as it’s slower growing and more manageable than many other climbers.
Position: Thrives in full sun for the best flowering and fragrance but will tolerate partial shade. Plant in a sheltered spot, ideally against a south- or west-facing wall to protect from cold winds.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil; benefits from added organic matter at planting.
Watering: Keep well-watered during establishment; moderately drought-tolerant once mature but appreciates regular moisture during dry spells.
Pruning: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and size. Remove any dead or tangled growth in early spring if needed.
Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Training: Provide strong supports such as trellises or wires; tie in young shoots until established, after which it will self-twine.
Trachelospermum jasminoides is perfect for training up walls, fences, trellises, or arches where its evergreen foliage and summer scent can be fully enjoyed. It also works beautifully as a fragrant backdrop in seating areas or patios and can even be grown in large containers with support. Pair it with climbing roses, clematis, or honeysuckle for a layered, romantic planting, or underplant with lavender, salvias, or grasses for Mediterranean-inspired style.
