About Viola Cornuta Mix 6 Pack 9cm Pot

Viola cornuta Mix, commonly known as the Horned violet, is a charming and free-flowering perennial that brings a delicate cascade of colour to borders, containers and cottage gardens. Producing a wonderful mix of blooms in shades of purple, violet, lavender, yellow and white, this compact and spreading variety flowers prolifically from spring through to autumn, and often well into winter in milder conditions. With its neat, tufted habit and prettily shaped petals, the Horned violet is a reliable and versatile performer that softens edges beautifully and looks equally at home tumbling over walls or weaving between other plants.

Growing conditions

Position: Viola cornuta Mix thrives in a position that receives full sun to partial shade. It performs particularly well where it receives morning sun with some protection from the hottest afternoon rays, which helps to prolong flowering during warmer months. It is well suited to temperate climates and is notably tolerant of cool conditions.

Soil: Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Horned violets prefer a fertile growing medium and benefit from the addition of compost or organic matter at planting time. Good drainage is important, as they dislike sitting in waterlogged conditions for extended periods.

Care

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells and warmer weather. Avoid allowing the roots to dry out completely, as this can cause plants to go dormant prematurely or reduce flowering. Mulching around the base of the plant helps to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks during the active growing and flowering season to encourage a continuous display of blooms. Avoid over-feeding with high-nitrogen products, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning and deadheading: Regular deadheading of spent flowers will encourage the plant to continue producing new blooms throughout the season. If plants become leggy or flowering begins to slow, cut them back by around one third to promote a flush of fresh growth and rejuvenated flowering. Horned violets may self-seed modestly, adding naturalistic charm to garden beds over time.

Winter care: Viola cornuta Mix is a hardy perennial that tolerates frost well in most temperate regions. Plants may die back in colder conditions but will typically reshoot from the base in spring. In cooler climates, a light mulch over winter can offer additional protection to the root zone.
