Viburnum Burkwoodii is a versatile and attractive shrub that adds beauty and fragrance to UK gardens. Its fragrant white flowers, glossy foliage, and fall color make it a favorite among gardeners. Easy to grow and maintain, it is suitable for various landscaping uses, including specimen plants, borders, and hedges. With its ability to attract wildlife and provide seasonal interest, Burkwood Viburnum is a valuable addition to any garden.

  • Leaves: The leaves are glossy, dark green, and oval-shaped, providing an attractive backdrop for the blooms. In the autumn, the foliage can turn shades of red and purple, adding seasonal color to the landscape.
  • Growth Habit: Burkwood Viburnum has a bushy, upright growth habit, typically forming a rounded shape. It generally grows to about 1.5 to 2.5 meters (5 to 8 feet) in height and spread, making it suitable for various garden settings.
  • Bloom Time: This viburnum blooms in mid to late spring (April to May in the UK), producing an abundance of fragrant flowers.
  • Flower Appearance: The flowers are small, white, and borne in clusters (corymbs), typically around 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) across. Each flower cluster has a delightful, sweet fragrance, which attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
  • Flower Arrangement: After blooming, the flowers develop into small, reddish berries that can attract birds, though they are not commonly eaten by humans.

This shrub prefers fertile, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay and loam. However, it thrives best in rich, organic matter. It does best in full sun, where it will flower abundantly. However, it can tolerate partial shade, though flower production may be less prolific. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer can be applied in early spring to encourage healthy growth, but Viburnum × burkwoodii typically does not require heavy feeding if grown in good soil. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged wood. This encourages new growth for the next season.

  • Hedge or Screen: Burkwood Viburnum can be used effectively as a hedge or privacy screen due to its dense growth habit.
  • Foundation Planting: Its manageable size makes it suitable for foundation plantings, borders, or as part of a mixed shrub border.
