Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' is a striking deciduous tree grown for its spectacular spring foliage display. As new growth emerges each season, the pinnate leaves unfurl in vivid shades of flamingo pink and coral, gradually transitioning through creamy white before maturing to fresh mid-green as summer progresses. This seasonal colour spectacle makes it one of the most eye-catching ornamental trees available for temperate gardens. Over time it develops into an elegant, upright to broadly spreading specimen tree with attractive furrowed bark, adding further interest through winter.

Growing conditions

Position: Plant Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' in a position that receives full sun for the best foliage colour. The vivid pink new growth is at its most intense when the tree receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. It will tolerate light shade but the characteristic colouring may be less pronounced. It performs well as a sheltered specimen in a lawn, courtyard or large border, and works beautifully as a focal point or feature tree in garden designs where seasonal drama is desired.

Soil: This tree is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam and sandy soils, provided drainage is reasonable. It prefers a fertile, moderately moist but well-drained soil and will establish most readily in conditions that do not become waterlogged over winter. Incorporating organic matter such as compost into the planting hole will encourage strong establishment and vigorous growth.

Hardiness: Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' is hardy in temperate climates, tolerating moderate frosts once established. In particularly cold or exposed sites, young plants may benefit from frost protection in their first winter or two until they develop a sturdy root system. It can also be grown successfully as a coppiced or pollarded specimen in pots and sheltered courtyard settings.

Care

Watering: During the first growing season after planting, water regularly to help the tree establish a strong root system, particularly during dry spells. Once established, Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' is reasonably drought tolerant and requires little supplementary watering except during prolonged dry periods in summer.

Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and encourage the best possible display of colourful new foliage. A top-dressing of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the tree each spring will also help maintain soil fertility and moisture retention.

Pruning: Little pruning is required to maintain a natural tree form. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before growth commences. For a more dramatic foliage effect, Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' responds exceptionally well to hard coppicing or pollarding — cutting stems back to a framework each late winter encourages a flush of very large, intensely coloured new foliage shoots. This technique also keeps the tree compact and manageable in smaller garden spaces.

General maintenance: Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' is generally a trouble-free tree with no serious pest or disease issues under normal garden conditions. Keep the area around the base of the tree clear of competing weeds, particularly in the establishment phase, and apply a mulch of bark or compost to conserve moisture and insulate the roots.
