Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' – Striking Evergreen Shrub with Bold Winter Buds

Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' is one of the most popular and widely grown skimmias, prized above all for its spectacular winter display of deep red flower buds. A male variety, it forms a neat, rounded mound of rich green foliage with attractive red-tinged margins, providing year-round structure and colour in shaded garden spaces.

From autumn through winter, dense clusters of dark red buds develop at the tips of the stems, turning the plant into a striking seasonal feature at a time when few other shrubs can compete. As spring arrives, these buds open into small, fragrant creamy-white flowers that attract early pollinators and release a pleasant, subtle scent into the surrounding garden.

Hardy, slow-growing, and thoroughly reliable, 'Rubella' thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, slightly acidic soil. Its compact, well-behaved habit makes it an excellent choice for containers, shaded borders, and woodland-style planting schemes. As a male variety, it can also act as a pollinator for nearby female skimmias, encouraging berry production across the planting.

Bold in winter, fragrant in spring, and handsome throughout the year — Skimmia 'Rubella' is an outstanding evergreen shrub for any shade garden.

Seasonal Highlights

Autumn: Deep red flower buds begin to form, providing early seasonal interest.
Winter: Bold clusters of dark red buds make a dramatic feature throughout the colder months.
Spring: Buds open into small, fragrant creamy-white flowers, attracting early bees and pollinators.
Summer: Glossy, dark green foliage with reddish margins maintains a tidy, rounded habit.

Key Features

  • Spectacular winter buds – Deep red clusters provide bold colour from autumn through winter.

  • Fragrant spring flowers – Creamy-white blooms with a pleasant, subtle scent.

  • Evergreen foliage – Rich green leaves with attractive red-tinged margins year-round.

  • Shade tolerant – Thrives in partial to full shade.

  • Pollinator variety – Male plant; excellent for encouraging berry production in nearby female skimmias.

  • Low maintenance – Slow-growing and naturally compact with minimal pruning required.

Perfect For

  • Winter interest planting – Bold red buds bring colour when the garden needs it most.

  • Shaded borders – Reliable evergreen structure in difficult low-light spots.

  • Containers – Ideal for patios, entrances, and sheltered courtyards.

  • Woodland gardens – Combines beautifully with ferns, hellebores, and hostas.

  • Mixed skimmia planting – Plant alongside female varieties to encourage berry production.

Growing Conditions & Care

Position: Partial to full shade; shelter from cold, drying winds and strong direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid chalky or waterlogged conditions. When growing in containers, use an ericaceous compost.

Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK, tolerating temperatures down to approximately -15°C.

Maintenance: Very low maintenance. Mulch annually with leaf mould or composted bark to retain moisture and maintain soil acidity. Water during prolonged dry spells. Little or no pruning is required; if needed, tidy lightly after flowering in late spring.

Looks Great With

  • Female skimmiasSkimmia japonica 'Veitchii', 'Nymans', or 'Finchy' for a berry display.

  • Winter interest plants – Hellebores, Sarcococca, Viburnum tinus.

  • Ferns – Dryopteris, Polystichum, Athyrium.

  • Spring bulbs – Snowdrops, Cyclamen coum, Crocus.
