Salvia ‘Sensation Dark Blue’ – Compact Beauty with Deep, Electric Blooms

Salvia Sensation Dark Blue is a striking compact perennial, loved for its intensely rich, violet-blue flower spikes that bloom abundantly above neat mounds of green foliage. Perfect for edging borders, planting in containers, or adding structure to mixed beds, this variety packs a bold color punch in a tidy form. Its long flowering season, low maintenance needs, and ability to attract pollinators make it a standout in any sunny garden.

Why Choose Salvia ‘Sensation Dark Blue’?

  • Vibrant Color: Features saturated deep blue-purple flower spikes that make an impact from a distance and contrast beautifully with silvery or green companions.

  • Compact Habit: With its tidy, clump-forming growth (typically 25–30 cm tall), it’s ideal for smaller spaces, edging, and containers.

  • Pollinator Friendly: A magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds—essential for wildlife-friendly gardens.

  • Drought Tolerant: Thrives in dry conditions once established—perfect for low-maintenance or Mediterranean-style gardens.

  • Extended Blooming: Flowers from late spring through summer, often with a second flush if deadheaded.

How to Grow Salvia ‘Sensation Dark Blue’

  • Position: Plant in full sun to ensure the richest color and best flowering performance.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy, soggy conditions.

  • Spacing: Space plants 25–30 cm apart to allow airflow and prevent mildew.

  • Watering: Water regularly when newly planted, but reduce once established. It's highly drought-tolerant and dislikes overwatering.

Care & Maintenance

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes to promote continuous blooming.

  • Pruning: After the first flush of flowers, lightly trim back to encourage reblooming. In early spring, cut back all old growth to just above new shoots.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring. Not overly hungry, so minimal feeding is needed.

  • Pest & Disease: Resistant to most pests and diseases. Good airflow prevents mildew.

Design Tip:

Pair with lavender, coreopsis, echinacea, or ornamental grasses for a soft-textured, pollinator-friendly planting scheme with bold contrasts and layered interest.

Salvia ‘Sensation Dark Blue’ is a compact gem with intense color and hardy performance, ideal for gardens of any size. Whether you're lining a path, dressing up a container, or creating a buzzing pollinator patch, this plant delivers elegance, resilience, and seasonal joy with ease.
