Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Porzellan' – Yakushima Rhododendron

Rhododendron yakushimanum 'Porzellan' is an exceptionally beautiful compact evergreen shrub, prized for its exquisite porcelain-pink buds that open to reveal pure white, funnel-shaped flowers in late spring. True to its yakushimanum heritage, it forms a neat, dome-shaped mound of deep green foliage, with new growth emerging covered in a striking silvery-white indumentum — a soft, felt-like coating that adds year-round textural interest. Hardy and reliable, 'Porzellan' is one of the finest compact rhododendrons available for British gardens.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Clusters of deep rose-pink buds open progressively to blush-pink and finally pure white, creating a multi-toned floral display of exceptional elegance.

  • Summer: Dense, dark green foliage forms a handsome evergreen mound, providing solid structure and ground-level interest.

  • Autumn: New growth begins to mature, revealing the characteristic silvery indumentum on the undersides of leaves.

  • Winter: Evergreen foliage and the distinctive woolly new growth buds maintain visual interest through the coldest months.

Key Features

  • Stunning flower colour transition – Buds open from deep pink through blush to pure white, offering a spectacular layered display.

  • Compact dome-shaped habit – Naturally tidy, mounding form requires minimal pruning.

  • Silvery indumentum – Striking felt-like coating on new growth and leaf undersides adds year-round textural appeal.

  • Fully evergreen – Deep glossy foliage provides structure in every season.

  • Exceptional hardiness – Yakushimanum hybrids are among the toughest rhododendrons available, coping well with cold, wind, and exposed conditions.

  • Low maintenance – Slow-growing and naturally well-behaved, needing very little intervention.

Perfect For

  • Borders and beds – An outstanding specimen or front-of-border feature in acidic soil gardens.

  • Containers – Thrives in large pots of ericaceous compost on patios or shaded terraces.

  • Woodland gardens – Perfectly at home in dappled shade beneath deciduous trees.

  • Exposed or coastal gardens – Exceptional wind tolerance makes it suitable for more challenging sites.

  • Small gardens – Naturally compact habit makes it ideal where space is limited.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in partial shade or dappled light; tolerates more sun than many rhododendrons provided roots are kept moist. Avoid deep shade or harsh, drying midday sun.

  • Soil: Requires moist, humus-rich, well-drained acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0). In containers, use a quality ericaceous compost.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, performing well even in exposed, colder gardens.

  • Watering: Water regularly, especially in dry periods. Use rainwater wherever possible, particularly in hard water areas, to avoid raising soil pH.

  • Feeding: Apply a specialist ericaceous fertiliser in spring to support flowering and healthy growth.

  • Pruning: Little pruning is required. Deadhead spent flower trusses carefully by snapping them off just above the new growth buds immediately after flowering to encourage a strong display the following year.

  • Mulching: Apply an annual mulch of ericaceous compost, leaf mould, or pine bark around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity. Keep mulch away from the stem.

Looks Great With

  • Other yakushimanum rhododendrons – Combine with varieties such as 'Silberwolke' or 'Dopey' for a stunning and varied compact display.
