Quercus Green Pillar

Columnar English Oak

Quercus robur ‘Green Pillar’ – Columnar English Oak (6–8cm Standard)

Quercus robur ‘Green Pillar’ is a striking, upright form of the classic English Oak, offering the strength and longevity of the native species in a much narrower shape. Supplied here as a 6–8cm girth standard tree, it is perfect for avenues, formal planting, or smaller gardens where space is limited but a grand, architectural tree is desired.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Fresh green leaves emerge alongside catkins, attracting pollinators.

  • Summer: Glossy, lobed foliage forms a dense, upright column.

  • Autumn: Leaves turn warm golden-brown before falling.

  • Winter: Strong trunk and narrow crown provide structure and silhouette.

Key Features

  • Columnar habit – Upright, narrow growth ideal for smaller gardens and avenues.

  • Classic oak character – Retains the strength, foliage, and acorns of English Oak.

  • Seasonal beauty – Fresh green leaves in spring, warm autumn tones later in the year.

  • Wildlife-friendly – Supports a huge range of insects, birds, and mammals.

  • Hardy and adaptable – Thrives in a variety of soils and conditions.

Perfect For

  • Avenues and driveways – Elegant rhythm without excessive spread.

  • Smaller gardens – Compact form fits into tighter spaces.

  • Formal landscapes – Architectural shape suits structured planting.

  • Wildlife gardens – Provides food and habitat while remaining manageable in size.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in full sun with space to develop vertically.

  • Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soils preferred; tolerates clay and loam.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK.

  • Care: Minimal pruning; remove dead or crossing branches in late summer. Water young trees well until established.

Looks Great With

  • Other columnar trees – Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’ or Quercus palustris ‘Green Pillar’ for variety.

  • Formal hedging – Yew, Box, or Hornbeam beneath for structure.

  • Autumn stars – Acers, Liquidambar, or Nyssa for extended seasonal displays.

  • Spring bulbs – Daffodils or Bluebells naturalised beneath.

Quercus robur ‘Green Pillar’ (6–8cm Standard) is a refined columnar oak that brings grandeur without excessive spread. Hardy, wildlife-friendly, and architectural, it’s the perfect choice for avenues, formal designs, or smaller gardens needing a long-lived feature tree.
