From Flowering Cherry

Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ – The Elegant Columnar Cherry

Prunus ‘Amanogawa’, also known as the Flagpole Cherry, is a striking ornamental tree celebrated for its narrow, upright habit and spectacular spring flowers. It’s the perfect choice for gardens where space is limited but beauty is a priority, offering vertical elegance without spreading too wide.

In mid to late spring, the tree bursts into bloom with large, semi-double, soft shell-pink flowers brushed with deeper pink towards the base of each petal. These highly fragrant blooms cluster densely along the stems, creating a breathtaking vertical cascade of blossom that draws pollinators and admiration alike.

After the blossom fades, fresh green foliage takes centre stage, providing a fresh and calming backdrop through summer. Come autumn, the leaves transform into warm shades of orange, gold, and red, adding a final flourish before the bare, upright branches bring winter structure to the garden.

Why Grow Prunus ‘Amanogawa’?

  • Perfect for Small Spaces – Columnar form suits narrow beds, patios, and avenues.

  • Fragrant Spring Blossom – Softly scented blooms in delicate shades of pink.

  • Seasonal Interest – Fresh green summer leaves and rich autumn colours.

  • Pollinator Friendly – Attracts bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Low Maintenance – Hardy and reliable in most UK gardens.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Full sun for best flowering; tolerates light shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained soil; adapts to most types except waterlogged ground.

Watering: Water regularly during the first year; drought-tolerant once established.

Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring.

Pruning: Minimal – prune only in summer to remove damaged or crossing branches, avoiding silver leaf disease risk.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Plant as a statement tree in a front garden for instant kerb appeal.

  • Use in formal lines or avenues for symmetry and seasonal drama.

  • Combine with spring bulbs like tulips and daffodils for layered colour.

  • Underplant with low perennials such as Heuchera or Geranium for summer interest.

Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ is a masterclass in compact elegance, delivering fragrance, colour, and seasonal charm in even the smallest spaces. Whether as a feature tree, a pair framing an entrance, or as part of a blossom-filled border, it brings a touch of Japanese grace to any garden.
