About Polystichum polyblepharum - Japanese Tassel Fern 3 Litre Pot

Polystichum polyblepharum - Japanese Tassel Fern

An elegant evergreen fern prized for its glossy fronds and graceful arching habit, bringing year-round structure and texture to shaded areas.

Seasonal Highlights

New fronds unfurl in spring with distinctive bristly scales resembling tassels, hence the common name. The glossy, dark green fronds maintain excellent colour throughout winter, providing valuable evergreen structure.

Key Features

  • Evergreen foliage for year-round interest
  • Glossy, architectural fronds add texture
  • Elegant arching habit softens hard landscaping
  • Low maintenance once established

Perfect For

Shaded borders, woodland gardens, beneath trees, alongside water features, and containers. Excellent for adding texture and structure to difficult shady spots. Works beautifully in Japanese-style gardens.

Growing Tips

Plant in partial to full shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during establishment. Mulch annually with leaf mould or compost. Remove old fronds in spring to make way for new growth.

Looks Great With

Combine with Hostas, Heucheras, Hellebores, Astilbes, and spring bulbs. Plant alongside Acers, Pieris, and other shade-loving shrubs for layered woodland planting.

A reliable, handsome fern that brings elegance and evergreen interest to shaded gardens.
