Phyllostachys Clump forming stiffly upright bamboo with grooved canes, bright mid-green at first, becoming brown yellow when mature.Narrow pointed yellowish to golden green leaves. Grows in fertile soil in full sun or dappled shade out of strong winds. Can grow from 2.5 and up to 8m in an ideal site.
Phyllostachys, a popular running bamboo, is favoured for its fast growth rate and dense clump formation. This stiffly upright bamboo features grooved canes that begin as bright mid-green and mature to brown-yellow, complemented by narrow, pointed, yellowish to golden-green leaves.
Where should I site my Phyllostachys?
Plant this bamboo in full sun to partial shade, using fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-draining soil. It can withstand colder weather and thrive in sunny conditions but should be protected from cold and drying winds, especially in coastal areas. If growing in pots, ensure regular feeding and watering, maintaining soil moisture without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Consider investing in a soaker hose to help keep your plants well-watered without having to think about it, especially during hotter weather.
As this type of bamboo can grow up to 8 meters tall in ideal situations, it is best to plant it alone, as it will quickly form a well-established hedge or screening.
Growth and Pruning
Since this bamboo variety grows slightly faster, it will require more frequent pruning to prevent it from becoming invasive.
To keep the bamboo manageable and healthy, remove weak, dead, or damaged canes down to ground level throughout the year and clear debris from the base. Enhance the appearance of the canes by removing lower foliage, either by snapping offside branches or cutting them with secateurs. This helps improve airflow and promotes growth. In spring, it's normal for leaves to yellow and drop as new growth appears, though some old leaves may remain attached, turning brown and papery.
