Phormium ‘Sundowner’ – Sunset-Toned Foliage with Strong Architectural Presence
Phormium ‘Sundowner’ is one of the most dramatic and colourful New Zealand flax varieties, celebrated for its sweeping, sunset-inspired foliage. Each broad, arching leaf is richly striped in pink, red, bronze, and olive-green, creating a warm, glowing palette that brings energy and movement to any garden space. The colours intensify in sunlight, giving the plant a radiant, tropical feel throughout the year.
Its bold, architectural form makes ‘Sundowner’ perfect as a focal point in borders, gravel gardens, or large containers, where its contrasting tones and upright fountain shape can be fully appreciated. Even in winter, the evergreen foliage provides structure and colour when other plants retreat, keeping the garden lively through the colder months.
Tough, reliable, and remarkably low maintenance, ‘Sundowner’ thrives in sunny, free-draining conditions and is well suited to coastal and urban gardens thanks to its tolerance of wind, salt, heat, and drought. Although larger than some Phormium cultivars, its flowing habit softens hard lines beautifully, making it a stunning centrepiece in contemporary and exotic-style planting schemes.
With its warm, glowing colours and bold presence, Phormium ‘Sundowner’ brings a touch of year-round drama and sunset beauty to the garden.
