Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’ – Sleek, Dark Foliage for Bold, Architectural Contrast
Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’ is one of the most striking New Zealand flax varieties, prized for its rich, dark, almost black foliage. Its upright, sword-like leaves form a strong architectural clump, creating instant impact and depth in borders, gravel gardens, and modern planting schemes. The dramatic colouring elevates any space, providing a bold backdrop for brighter or lighter plants that glow against its deep, moody tones.
Compact compared to larger Phormium tenax types, ‘Platt’s Black’ fits beautifully into small gardens and large containers, offering year-round structure without overwhelming surrounding plants. In sunlight, its foliage takes on subtle shades of maroon and plum, adding richness and dimension to its already striking appearance.
Hardy in mild areas and exceptionally tough once established, this Phormium thrives in sunny, free-draining conditions and handles coastal exposure, heat, wind, and drought with ease. Minimal maintenance is required — simply remove old leaves at the base to keep the plant looking crisp and architectural.
Dramatic, stylish, and effortlessly contemporary, Phormium ‘Platt’s Black’ is the perfect choice for gardeners wanting strong structure and powerful colour contrast all year round.
