Philadelphus are deciduous shrubs which are ideal for planting in a border or as a specimen plant in a woodland garden. They have simple, ovate leaves and fragrant, four-petalled flowers. Philadelphus prefer moderately fertile soil in full or partial sunlight. Water freely during the growing season and use a good quality liquid fertiliser to keep them in good health

Virginal', commonly known as mock orange, is an excellent way to enhance your garden with a classic, fragrant, and easy-to-grow shrub. This variety of mock orange is known for its larger size, beautiful double flowers, and strong fragrance.

  • One of the main reasons people plant Philadelphus 'Virginal' is for its strong, citrus-like fragrance. The scent is often compared to orange blossoms, making it an attractive addition near patios, walkways, or windows where its perfume can be enjoyed. The shrub produces an abundance of pure white, double flowers that can be 2 inches wide. The showy, bowl-shaped flowers bloom in late spring to early summer (June), creating a spectacular display for several weeks.
  • Has bright green, ovate leaves that contrast beautifully with its white blooms. The foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, providing structure and color even when the shrub is not in bloom.
  • It is a relatively large shrub, reaching heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters with a similar spread.
  • This makes it ideal for filling larger spaces in the garden, creating privacy screens, or adding height and structure to borders. The shrub has a dense, upright habit that makes it perfect for creating informal hedges or using as a background plant in mixed borders.

Is a low-maintenance shrub that thrives in a variety of soil types, including poor soils, and is tolerant of urban pollution. It is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners. While light pruning after flowering can help maintain shape and encourage stronger flowering the following year, the shrub generally requires very little maintenance to thrive.

It can withstand cold winters and grow in a wide range of climates. Its resilience makes it a dependable choice for many regions. this shrub is relatively drought-tolerant, making it suitable for gardens where water conservation is important or for areas with less consistent rainfall.

Due to its larger size and dense growth, Philadelphus Virginal is often used to create informal hedges or privacy screens. Its showy blooms add beauty while its thick foliage helps create a sense of seclusion. The shrub can also serve as a focal point in a border or garden bed, especially when in full bloom, adding both vertical interest and mass to garden designs.

Guide to Planting Field-Grown Root Balled Plants

Pros:

  1. Established Roots: Typically stronger, established roots ensure better initial growth.
  2. Immediate Impact: Larger plants provide instant structure and aesthetics.

Cons:

  1. Heavy and Bulky: Can be difficult to transport and plant due to size and weight.
  2. Seasonal Availability: Generally available only in the dormant season (autumn to early spring).

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Unwrap Carefully: Remove any packaging material, but leave the burlap or wire basket on.
  2. Keep plants moist: Plants should be kept moist until the time of planting.

Planting Process:

  1. Dig a Hole: Make a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  2. Position Plant: Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the ground surface.
  3. Do Not Remove Root Sack: Leave the burlap or wire basket around the root ball. It is bio degradable and will rot away naturally.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil and avoid wilting.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Initial Shock: Some plants may suffer transplant shock, leading to potential losses.
  • Mitigation: Proper care and consistent watering during the establishment phase can minimise this risk.

Main Causes of Failure:

  1. Improper Planting Depth: Planting too deep or too shallow can stress the roots.
  2. Poor Soil Conditions: Compacted or poorly drained soil can hinder root growth.
  3. Insufficient Watering: Both under-watering and over-watering can lead to plant stress and failure. Strong wind can dry leafy pants.
  4. Pest and Disease: Lack of protection and monitoring can result in damage from pests and diseases.

Tips for Success:

  1. Stake Larger Plants: Support with stakes to prevent wind damage.
  2. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
  3. Regular Monitoring: Check for signs of stress, pests, and disease, and address them promptly.

By following these guidelines and providing consistent aftercare, you can successfully plant and establish field-grown root balled plants in your garden.
