Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' – Mock Orange
Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' is one of the finest mock oranges available, celebrated for its richly fragrant flowers and elegant, compact habit. In early summer the shrub is smothered in large, single white blooms, each one adorned with a striking flush of deep maroon-purple at the centre that sets this cultivar apart from plainer forms.
The scent is truly exceptional — a warm, sweet perfume strongly reminiscent of orange blossom that drifts through the garden on still summer evenings. Few shrubs deliver such a powerful and uplifting fragrance, making 'Belle Etoile' a garden classic that earns its place year after year.
The naturally arching stems and fresh, mid-green deciduous foliage give the shrub a graceful, relaxed shape that sits comfortably in both formal and informal planting schemes. Its relatively compact, manageable size means it suits a wide range of gardens without ever becoming overwhelming.
Fully hardy, unfussy, and rewarding to grow, Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' asks for very little in return for a spectacular early summer display. A timeless choice for cottage gardens, mixed borders, and any spot where fragrance is a priority.

Soil: Any reasonable, well-drained soil; tolerates most soil types including chalk.
Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK.

Care & Pruning
Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering, cutting back flowered shoots to strong young growth lower down the stem. Remove one or two of the oldest stems at the base each year to keep the plant vigorous and well-shaped.
Feeding: A general-purpose fertiliser applied in spring will encourage healthy growth and a good flower display.
General care: Very low maintenance once established. Tolerates periods of neglect and will still perform reliably season after season.
Looks Great With
Beautiful alongside roses, particularly pink and red varieties whose colour is enhanced by the white blooms. Pairs wonderfully with deutzias, weigelas, and other early summer shrubs. The white flowers contrast superbly with purple-leaved shrubs such as cotinus or berberis, and complement blue hardy geraniums and alliums planted at its feet.
