Philadelphus Belle Etoile

Mock Orange

Philadelphus are deciduous shrubs which are ideal for planting in a border or as a specimen plant in a woodland garden. They have simple, ovate leaves and fragrant, four-petalled flowers. Philadelphus prefer moderately fertile soil in full or partial sunlight. Water freely during the growing season and use a good quality liquid fertiliser to keep them in good health.

Philadelphus Belle Etoile commonly known as mock orange, is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a shrub that offers beautiful blooms, delightful fragrance, and low maintenance. This deciduous shrub is particularly prized for its ornamental value and ease of care.

  • One of the most notable features of Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' is the strong, sweet fragrance of its flowers, which resemble the scent of orange blossoms. This makes the shrub a popular choice for sensory gardens, patios, or near walkways where the delightful scent can be enjoyed. Shrub produces masses of single, white flowers with a purple flush at the center, giving them a striking appearance. These large, bowl-shaped blooms are produced in late spring to early summer (May to June), creating a visually stunning display.
  • After flowering, the shrub retains attractive, lush green foliage, providing a backdrop for other plants in the garden.
  • Typically grows to a height and spread of about 1.2 to 1.8 meter
  • Making it perfect for smaller gardens or tight spaces where larger shrubs might be too overwhelming. Its compact, bushy form makes it ideal for a range of planting schemes, including borders, informal hedges, or as a stand-alone specimen shrub.

This shrub is very easy to grow and requires little maintenance, making it suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. It is tolerant of a range of soil types and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. Although occasional pruning after flowering can help maintain its shape and encourage vigorous growth, Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' generally requires little in the way of regular pruning.

The shrub's classic, old-fashioned look makes it a great addition to cottage-style gardens or more traditional landscapes. 'Belle Etoile' is perfect for adding structure to mixed borders or creating informal hedges. Its dense growth provides privacy, and its profusion of flowers adds seasonal interest.
